New entry door help - long post

We are installing a new entry door with two sidelites and need design and color help. The house faces east so it's full sun until mid day. We are going with a Homeguard fiberglass entry door 3/4 glass with full glass sidelites and a storm door.

I want to do internal blinds in the sidelites and was thinking of going with white so that it matches the inside of the house rather than the outside door color. I also would prefer to go with stain instead of a paint color, but am open to ideas. So, I really need help in choosing a glass insert design and door color if someone can help.

I am leaning towards mahogany stain for the door and Topaz glass design. I would like to keep the glass design simple, nothing ornate or fancy. Privacy rating on the glass isn't important our house is on a cul de sac and sits back about 50 feet from the road. For the storm door they don't offer mahogany stain for the storm door so what would you suggest?

I agree with everyone who suggests removing the shutters. You could put a slightly larger wood frame around them if you don't like the "plain" look of the windows. Your house has a simple classic modern look, so I would suggest doing plain glass, or a reeded glass, no pattern; the blinds will be enough pattern, anything else could look too busy. As decoenthusiaste said, you need much bigger (but simple) lanterns, and in a color that will match the metal trim on your new doors. As for the door color, I think you need a color scheme for the whole front of your house before you decide. But if you don't want to change anything: it looks as if your roof is brown, and I would go with the English walnut or colonial brown so that both doors could match. However, the white trim doesn't work well with your brick. I would change the trim and siding color, for example, or even consider a limewash for the brick. The wood-look doors are probably the most versatile color to go with whatever paint colors you choose. And finally, this could be a really good-looking house, but it is in desperate need of some landscaping, especially under the windows, and a front sidewalk. I’d do a designer glass, kinda how your tree is reflecting in the glass now, spraying up like a fan design. As far as the color I’d try to match the windows

Lots of colors going on. White siding, pink brick, shutters appear to be a wood.
White trim. Black door. I’d consider painting the frames of window frames and getting rid of the shutters. The brick can be stained (not painted) if you want to change the color. But I’d go with a dark/light theme. Using the link brick as the lighter contrast

It’ll change the whole appearance of the home.

Sorry! I just think the current door isn’t a problem. And those other two things would be more of a priority for me.

I love wood doors. But if nothing changes on the exterior of the home I think black works best.

It's good to say why you are doing something -- helps keep things on track.

Is there a problem with the current door such that it requires replacement?

Taken in isolation, I like the color of the existing door, but when looking at the entire house, I see that all your windows and trim are white, which suggest that the door, or at least its trim should also be white.

Yes, we need to change the front door because the bottom sill and lower side jambs have water damage and is starting to leak during heavy rain storms. The current door is a very dark green, which is what the old shutters were. I was trying to avoid matching to the shutters again and go with something more neutral.

I never thought about removing the shutters, that might be a good idea for a different look. I might have some issues with the siding having faded over the years since the front gets direct sun half the day.

Some other ideas to think of though, thanks for your input.

Remove shutters, increase size of lanterns to be 1/3 of the door's height, find a Romabio stain to change the brick color. Then pick the door/storm colors.

If you don't remove the shutters, paint them black and then a black door would coordinate. I don't think you want to introduce another color or stain to what you have already.

I’d stain the brick using NewLook concrete stain. Then I’d tear off all the vinyl siding and replace with hardie plank.
