Looks like crabgrass!

Crabgrass needs to be killed before it takes over American lawns. Head for nursery/garden shop and they’ll point you to the right products. Good luck. A healthy lawn will also help with this invasive headache.

you will have more weeds to kill.

I think you have bahiagrass. Hope you like mowing constantly. Those seed things get so tall very quickly. Unless your neighbors are also going to mow often enough so that seed things don't form, it's a lost cause. All of the grass in this area includes this stuff.

The red stems, leaf arrangement, and tall, "V" shaped inflorescence match bahiagrass.

Doesn't look like Bahia grass to me - it looks more like crabgrass.

Wait - is there something wrong with Bahia grass? It's used extensively here and I've never known it to be considered a problem. I have it in my yard and like it - esp. when it goes to seed, which I then mow to help spread those seeds.

Yes, there is something wrong with bahia, a lot of things. Non-native invasive and if you don't like mowing constantly, bahiagrass is hideous. Within 2 weeks, those bloom things shoot up for half of the year, making the lawn look awful. Most of the other grasses would look fine if only mowed every 3-5 weeks. So there is more time wasted on mowing, increased cost of running the mower more, and the generation of more pollution from the mower running twice as often as otherwise needed, and on any given day for at least half of the year, about half of the lawns in the area look so terrible you wonder if the houses are abandoned.

No cool season grass can be left for anywhere close to 3 weeks before mowing from April on!! During the primary growing season, once a week is SOP - more often if heavily irrigated.

If that's not crabgrass it's its identical twin.

I don't think any of the grasses in my area are cool season grasses. There's mostly Bermuda, centipede, & St. Augustine with some Zoysia, torpedograss, wiregrass, bahiagrass, and a few other vines that are called grass. Except bahia, they're much more interested in traveling sideways than growing upward. Never heard of bahiagrass until I moved to AL so I figured Dene was probably also in a similar climate.
