if I plan to use a non-power push mower, does that mean no St. Aug?

hello all!

I am hoping to get a tiny, postage-stamp sized lawn going soon. "Soon."

I am highly motivated to avoid power tools bc of the noise. (I know this may seem annoying.)

So I was looking at mowers and trying to figure out what mow height I would need for St. Aug lawn - which I was leaning towards bc it is hot here - in order to know what mower to get - and people here were saying that a reel mower won't work well with St. Aug.

Well, then I think that means I won't use St. Aug? Or, is there wiggle room on this issue?

And, there aren't rotary mowers that are non-powered, right? (Although, now that I'm typing this, maybe there are electric mowers I could tolerate. I will look into that too.)

But is it true that for St. Aug you need a rotary mower?

If I use a string trimmer on my St Augustine it looks fine right after trimming, but the ends of the blades are shredded and it doesn’t look good the next day when the ends turn brown.

I am quite willing to believe this may be due to the quality of the trimmer or the operator.

Actually, a reel mower will probably do a better job than a rotary on St. Agustine. I use a reel push mower on my bermuda hybrid. The gas mowers used by gardeners are reel mowers.

I use a reel push mower on my St Augustine. I don’t know if it is the ideal height but the part that my dog doesn’t pee on looks great.

My St Augustine is so dense I ended buying a self propelled EGO battery powered mower to get through it. Mine is much larger than a postage stamp, though. If all I had was a small yard, I would get the EGO battery powered string trimmer. I have one of those, too. By swinging it back and forth in front of you, you can cover a very large swath of grass very quickly. Being battery powered it doesn't make much noise. Most of the noise is the strings whipping through the air.

It is wonderful to hear that the electric machines work so well!! When they take over, it is going to be a much nicer world. Somebody should get some type of award for that.

If you plan to buy an electric mower (bladed, not a string trimmer), you might want to check into the rebates that are available in many areas of CA. I think some of them are quite generous. [This one offers a $200 rebate for a $251 - 400 electric mower Electric Lawn Mower Rebate Program (aqmd.gov) ] You do have to turn in a working gas mower for the rebate, but it does not matter how old it is. Our lawn is tiny, but the rebate made buying the replacement machine an easy choice.
