Zellige tile experience

Wanted to pass along my experience with zellige tile. Selected the 2x6 natural white subway tile from Riad. Shipping was slightly delayed but I'm fairly certain that was due to the delivery company--delay was maybe a few days to 1 week late but nothing too terrible. Due to a less than wonderful delivery, we ended up with approximately half a box of very broken tiles and 1.5 boxes of damaged but still potentially usable tile. I was worried at this point that this was all a mistake. However, the damaged tile wasn't Riad Tile's fault and when I emailed Riad this feedback with photos, they immediately offered to replace and sent new boxes very promptly. The second shipment was recevied on time and in much better shape with very few (if any) broken tiles. For the grout, my contractors used Laticrete Spectralock in bright white. They were still able to use a lot of the damaged tiles from the first batch based on cuts and placement, so I still have tons left over and plan to use it at some point in the future for a fireplace update. Overall, extremely pleased with the tile, Riad customer service, and the overall results and very happy I took a chance on this tile. I've included photos of the final results and one picture of some of the damaged tiles that Riad replaced. Riad customer service was amazing and I wouldn't hesitate to order from them again.

We spoke a few times with Riad, Zia, and some additional tile suppliers. All seemed surprised at the question and the warning by Clé. Zia Tile did guarantee to us, from both their sales and their fabricators, that the heat would not be an issue. With that (in writing) we ordered the tile from Zia. It is installed and is gorgeous. We are extremely happy with it. We used the oven for baking during the holidays without any issue. We have yet to use the oven at max temp and cannot comment on that. Though, so far at 425 degrees the tile looks perfect!

I am curious. How does this tile clean up behind the range where cooking splashes and oil film occur? Since the surface isn't perfectly flat, is it more difficult to wash that wall?

To be honest, I’m not sure yet. The range only got installed a few days ago. I made chili yesterday but on the front burner so there wasn’t any splatter to clean up. The installer said this grout is super stain resistant and the tile itself is glazed. He’s been doing tile for ages so hopefully he’s right!

@L C, checking in on your installation.

We are looking to have a Zellige Tile backsplash. However, when looking at the Cle Tile as an option. We came across the below warning in their Zellige tile specifications, about placing the tile behind an oven. We will have a Thermador oven that we've read about a good amount of people having discoloration and scorching of Quartz and Marble from the rear vent. We've also reached out to Cle Tile, Riad, and Zia Tile, which they all seem to not have any information of the below issue. We're trying to find out if this is a Cle Tile specific issue, or something that happens with all Zellige tiles. Just wondering if you've observed any issues? Maybe Riad has better quality tiles?

mattmerth, did you ever find out about the Zellige tile behind your Thermador range? We also ordered a Thermador and planned to install the clay tiles behind it. I see it in so many pictures directly behind the range?
