ARgh - Paint and Cab Color Dilemna!

We’ve updated most our house and now its time to tackle the 20 year old cabinets put in by the original owner. We plan to *reface* the cabinets as the boxes are in excellent shape and we like dark granite (although we don’t love the brown accents in it, the dark color has hid 7 years of spills and works for us now w kids and dog).

Our goal is to bring the old fashion style of the kitchen in line with the more transitional style of the rest of the house. We will pick a shakerish type style and will definitely get rid of all the medallions and braided molding and replace with cleaner lines.

our challenge is picking cabinet colors/ wood and kitchen wall color!!! we would also love to incorporate natural wood but dont want a dark kitchen (it has only 1 south facing window and the rest face north so we usually have lights on even during the day in sunny florida).

constraints (things that we cant change):

1. yellow or orangish maple floors (the pic w the dog in it is the clearest example of color)

2. Sherwin Williams Alabaster is the trim and molding throughout entire house and so if we go white, this must be the color (there is also spots where kitchen cabs and house trim litetally touch)

3. black granite countertops are staying for now

4. if kitchen walls are painted a light color they should probably be the light color that is everywhere else in our house that does not have a dark color. that light color is Benjamin Moore Sleighbells - its the light bluish grey that is on every wall.

5. if a bold wall color, it should probably be something other than the green and dark and medium blues you see elsewhere. we love thge dark orangey-red in kitchen now but recognize it may be a bit dated.

We seem stuck between a rock and the proverbial hard place! Any advice ??

I just recently refaced my kitchen cabinets through Home Depot. Your size of kitchen is about the same size as mine. It will cost you at least 50,000 to reface. I kept my granite, too. I refaced my kitchen in sw alabaster. That being said, it isn’t cheap to reface. Your cabinets look like they are in good condition. I also priced a professional paint cabinet painter to price my cabinets and it was 20,000. I would suggest one color throughout your open floor plan. You have tons of color on your walls. I really love the blue accent wall though! SW alabaster looks amazing with SW anew gray. I did those two colors in my home. The granite you have is called tan brown granite. I have also seen it called cranberry granite. I would pick a wall color in those tones.

Honestly, I can see just ( if possible) removing the medallions and leaving the cabinets as they are. I think choosing a different wall color is going to make a huge difference. I think the orange walls are too contrary to the rest of the house and definitely don't help with the transitional style you prefer.

Everything else you have is fairly neutral so I would be open to suggestions for different paint color and I think the cabinets are pretty fine as they are.

thank you both so much! Yhe preliminary quotes for refacing in a shaker type style plus a new 9” cabinet to fill the hole next to stove and increasing the heights of really low cabinets from 30 to 36” (that would leave the double glass at 42” high and 15” deep deep; the height if the double glass also matches the oven and the 2 subzero height) are coming in at around $30-35,000. The cost to paint the existing cabinets are coming in at $10-15,000. I ordered all our bathroom vanities and our laundry room cabinetry directly from CabinetJoint (conestoga) so I could go that route as well (I still need to price that out) and would likely save on the refacing (although its a bit intimidating with a kitchen this size). unfortunately, the cabinets need something because most of them have lost their finish around the pulls (new PIC below below). So I have to either paint or reface.

I’ll look up SW Anew Gray as a potential wall colo - thank you! I know the reddish orange we have sticks out but it does actually tie into all our persian rugs and our art work which have lots if reds, oranges, and blues. so our rugs and paintings have rich warm colors and i was worried only blue and grays walls would be too cold.
