There is nothing wrong with neutrals, so don't try to interject color with pillows that don't make you happy just because we designers are always jabbering on about color. Let's pretend that I had the power to forbid you to use color! Aha! What to do, what to do.

That doesn't mean you can't add pattern and texture. The animal kingdom is full of neutral colored animals that we find fascinating. There are some dreamy rugs that offer subtle textural differences that make us love them. Design magazines are full of beautiful rooms done all in neutrals. Stick to what you like. You've done a pretty good job so far, though you could certainly use some LARGE art. I hope you're not afraid of large.

Carolyn- I love the Greenwich family home That definitely reminds me of my style. I LOVE the neutral soft rug. I even love the look of the very slight wide stripes on the rug. AND the pillows! These are items I found in a 5 minute search on houzz.. It's pretty easy these days to get pillows made in your choice of size and color and pattern through etsy and other websites, or from Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel and others.

Finding the right rug will be easier if you contact your local rug dealer and tell him (they never seem to be women) what you're looking for. Be specific about price range, style and color. It will be helpful to take fabrics from your home with you. Be sure to try the rug in your house before committing to it.

What does everyone think of this rug from Ballards? I love the classic damask pattern and the neutral warm color of the "gold" one. Some people have told me it is too "dressy and feminine". But it drew me in right away. Thoughts???

How about a rug with no pattern but a lot of texture?

One more thing. You should lower your display shelves by at least a foot. Reduce the number of photos on them and try to get a large photo to put on them at least 2 1/2 to 3 feet tall. Then put on one or two other items on the shelf of varying sizes. Alternatively, you could place one high and one low but still reduce stuff on shelves.

For added texture in your pillows, you could use one Mongolian lamb pillow, either square or rectangular.
Regarding rugs, Surya sent me an email this morning saying that they are having 75% off some of their rug, tho I doubt you'd be able to return one.

Do you know where to find a rug like the ones in these photos? My family is kind of tall so the shelves are at our eye level with lots of family photos so it is more than likely those will be staying where they are :) In addition, with the chairs being in the corners they needed some head room :) Thanks for suggestion!

Regarding the Ballards rug, I think it's perhaps too formal. How about their Hadley rug?

I do like the pattern but I was looking for something a little more comfy. What do you think of these options from Pottery Barn? Are they too plain? I know I said I didn't like "shag" but how comfy does the second rug look!

My family is tall too, so most of my artwork/mirrors are a little higher than the recommended height. :-)

They are from Ballard Designs and I'm pretty sure they still have them! :)

I very much like the Surya Nuage rug., shown below, and have placed one in a client's home where it looks fabulous! Yes, the Pottery Barn rugs are a little plain.

I feel you need some color

We can make you a custom rug for that area in a tan and ivory, and we can send you physical samples of the carpet first to make sure that they work perfectly in the room! I think a striped rug with just a small pop of color would be great.
