Goodness. That's a glorious piece!! A showstopper, really. Were it in my kitchen, I'd make sure everything else would be bowing to it, so to speak. Seriously. Please do not mar this piece with paint. And if you want to lighten the back of it, opt for a temporary method (painting or wallpapering a board than can be buttressed against the back). With that warm wood, my vote goes to green rather than pink but test your colour ideas with stuff on hand (clothing, for example) before buying test cans.

Painting would cheapen it, both in looks and in monetary value. Please do not paint it.

I’d replace the top “level” hardware.
And paint the inside a light creamy color.
If your nervous to ruin it, you can paint some wood inserts as suggested above...

Possibly remove the hardware and clean them up. The upper cabinet hardware appears to have a different finish and style than the lowers. Try to find uppers that compliment the lower pulls. The upper pulls look like they were swapped in the 60s or 70s.

Im not necessarily against painting antique wood pieces, just like im not necessarily against painting over art. if i found an old oil painting of a ship sailing over a rolling sea painted by my neighbours great uncle Jasper at their yard sale, i would paint over it no problem. However, if i stumbled upon an A. Y. Jackson original, i would not. Same principle applies here. You have a gorgeous work of art. Please dont ruin it.

I wonder if the lower hardware has been replaced, too. I have several flatwall cabinets, and the original upper pull is a wooden knob with a brass disc, very similar to the pattern of the carving on the sides of your cabinet. My guess is your cabinet had the same style knobs. On my cabinet which still has the original drawer pulls, they are the same as the upper knob. Even on my cabinets which are missing the original drawer pulls, there is only one hole for the hardware, so I'm assuming a knob was used. On your drawers, there is one set of holes half-way between the middle and the edge of the drawer, which is also the position of the knobs on two of my cabinets. (On a third cabinet the holes were drilled only a few inches from the sides, so this is just another guess--it might depend on the overall width of the drawer/cabinet.)

Anyway, that's not what you asked. Please do not paint the cabinet. As others have mentioned, use painted or wall-papered backing to change the appearance of the inside. I used thin fake beadboard in an open dish hutch in my DR, painted to match the kitchen cabinets.

That is a gorgeous piece, please don’t ruin it with paint. I love the idea of wallpapering the inside hopefully on thin plywood that you can put inside to avoid wallpapering the wood.

Several years ago I was tempted to paint an antique cabinet that my husband bought for me for an anniversary. I’m so glad I didn’t, I would have ruined it.

agree with previous post I would not paint. I would replace the handles on doors. They seem 1950s country pine kitchen not the style of that cabinet. Time for vintage hardware shopping imo not painting The lower cabinet hardware may not be original but they fit the piece better than the door IMO Then do some pretty wallpaper on fill board back of cabinet would brighten.

Please don't paint it. The beautiful carved wood and design will disappear under a coat of paint.
