My builder uses Houzz Pro to plan the timeline and give detailed estimates and daily updates with photos of progress, and provide invoices at pre-agreed key points in the build. This made the whole experience much more efficient and stress-free.

Want to see my Refaced Kitchen before / after?

Some of you may remember my many many many posts asking for advice about our 1990 contemporary kitchen and house.

We moved into our house two years ago and have been slowly updating it.

We are only the second owners and EVERYTHING in the house is original.

I was a huge fan of white kitchens and still do really like them, however I went with a two-toned kitchen for this home because it features so much wood in the rest of the home and I wanted to remain true to the original finishes of the home.

The original owner did some quite interesting things over the years had us scratching our heads, like putting flooring tile around the original kitchen sink! 🤷🏻‍♀️

He was ahead of his time by installing so many lower drawers, so that worked out well.

We transformed the kitchen desk area into drawers for my mixer and made the built-in shelving into glass front cabinets for my China and glassware.

We elongated the peninsula and added a garbage pullout.

The original cabinets were in very good shape. They are made by custom wood products.

We decided to just re-face since they are very solid and had a lot of years left.

Our new doors are maple and made by Elias Woodwork.

Sink is Kraus Kore Workstation.

Faucet is Trask Pro Arctic Stainless by Delta.

Countertops are MSI BLANCA STATUARIETTO.

We still have to address the original floor, which is cracked in many areas.

Also have some outlets to switch out to white.

There were a lot of hiccups (see original backsplash disaster! ) with this project and it took a lot longer than we had intended, but I am happy with the outcome!

This was what the kitchen looked like in the listing. But it didnt scare me away! I knew there coucould be a beautiful kitchen under the orange wood backsplash and the weird above the range microwave shelf 😉

And let’s not even begin with the flourescent box on the ceiling!

I love the layout, the amazing windows, the space…

      Looks great! How difficult was it to replace the microwave with a range hood? I’m looking to do the same.

      We were fortunate to have the range on an outside wall so they just ran the ducts straight up and out the back.

      It is nice that you paid homage to the original. The wood is beautiful and I like it with the white uppers. I especially like how you kept the wood interiors with the glass doors. Congrats!

      Great job! It stays true to the home, which was your goal. I am a fan of refacing (I’ve done it twice) and if a layout is reasonable and the original cabinets, like yours, are solid wood, it makes a lot of sense. Love the two tone look and your floor actually looks better with the lowers being medium wood. Enjoy!

      Can I ask about paint colors?
      The paint there now is just a basic white.

      I brought these home one day mid-project to see what looks okay in natural light.
      They read a bit dark on my phone screen.

      Thoughts? As you can probably tell, I tend to choose neutrals.

      So, it looks like you replaced the existing cabinet door with new. Is that correct?

      If you plan to change the floor, pick the paint last.

      yes. Refacing is replacing doors/drawer fronts but keeping existing boxes.

      They apply a thin veneer to the trim to color match new door finish.

      Can you put the paint chip colors near the window where you have sheet rock? It’s hard to get a sense of the walls when the chips are only on the cabinets. And you might consider getting Samplize ones since they are larger and can be placed right on the wall.

      I'm stuck on my floor also because it seems like such a huge project to remove tile..and expensive. So while I wait I found grout paint at Home Depot and painted the dark grout in my tile and I feel so much better about the floor!! Looks clean and new. Will tide me over for a while.
