I think you are on the right track. A little bigger, and a little more metal.

Mirrors can look gorgeous over fireplaces. This one could, or an alternative. My only reservation is that it doesn't seem to be reflecting anything worth looking at -- but if I am reading the second picture right, there is an opposite wall that could hold art under the railing? Or a wall hanging? How high is that railing? Then the mirror would reflect the colour and that could look wonderful.

Hang it a little bit higher will look better. By the way, it's a nice mirror, love it :)

Thanks everyone! I wish the mirror was a little shinier. But size wise its over 3 feet in diameter. Still bigger?? Opposite this wall will be 3 pieces of framed art.

Good, about the art. From what I can see, those pics are really pretty. I have no problem with the size of the mirror and the frame is really attractive. Unless you find one you like better, could you not get someone to replace the glass itself with a shinier mirror?

Mirror's should reflect something beautiful or interesting. Right now, yours is reflecting an empty wall and stair railing. When you hang the 3 pieces it may reflect them, or not, since it is small and round. The question is; do you want to have 6 of those in your room? That is what a mirror does, it doubles things, so make sure it is reflecting something you want to see more of. My favorite things to double are wonderful views and beautiful chandeliers. Your mirror blends into the wall, but if you love the styling, maybe you can spray paint it a different metallic color.

I don’t know if you would do this or not. Everyone always talks about the accent wall. I am usually not a fan, but you have some things to accent her. I nice white fireplace surround, two oversized windows with great plantation shutters and your very nice, but as lefty 47 says, a little weak colored mirror. How about painting the wall a darker color, in the tone of your sofa?

Personally I think the mirror size is fine, because the frame is so wide. I like how the candlesticks you have pick up the black in the screen, but perhaps find something with a shinier look. It would go with the mirror's frame and perhaps make it appear larger visually. Because of the size it is, once hung you could have taller items on each end of the mantle and they would not intrude upon the front of the mirror & frame. Where that small round picture frame is you could have a silver or chrome toned tall candlestick or vase.

The picture above in judianna20's example shows a mirror that is roughly the same size as yours in relation to the fireplace size.

Agree with above. Mirror will not pop on this wall looks a bit drab due to metal color and it would be nice if it reflected something, but looks like if you hang it higher it would reflect the stair railing.

I think a big white mirror would really work there :)

The mirror does seem to blend with the wall, if you could spray paint it white I think it would make a big difference you will get the look you are trying to create! nice choices!

I think the mirror is fine, but center it height-wise between the top of the mantle and ceiling. It's too low as it is. It doesn't matter if people can't see their reflections in it. It will reflect light and that's valuable.

I hope you enjoy the way that discussions veer off into an area you never intended, but I was intrigued by judianna's idea that a darker accent colour on the wall might work to highlight the mirror. I've fiddled a bit, and the colour that seems to me to look best is a dark teal. I do like your current wall colour, but just in case you might like to consider a change ...

Thanks to everyone for contributing. We bought a new house and have painted most rooms (incl this one), bought new furniture...so we are at the end of our budget for decor and accessories! ;) It is very hard to find a large, attractive mirror for under $200. That said, even with the art hung where it's supposed to go on the opposite wall, the mirror will still only reflect the wall and maybe some of the catwalk. If we were to hang art over the fireplace - what is an appropriate size? Do the colors/frame material and theme have to be in the same family as the art on the other wall?

You might also consider painting the trim on the mirror a flat black so it stands out better agains the wall and ties in with the black interior of the firebox.

me too hasty and too stupid; so that explains that. For hanging pictures, it's a balancing act that one needs.

You could put the mirror over the sofa and hang two of the pieces of art over the FP. Prop up a couple and take pix so we can see.

Nope, the mirror is too small over the sofa, but it was a good suggestion. It looks good over the fireplace, but doesn't show up well in the photos. Perhaps it does in real life?

It does show a little better but I think I may use it somewhere else and search for something with more pop.

Why is it a no no? Mirror is good hang 5-6" above mantel. Add turquoise items to mantel. To bring some color in like a glass tall pots.

Add tall tree behind chair bring it into room more. Add small table next to hair. Add 3 various heights of pots next to firepl and chair, in color. From chair.

Mirror is big enough. Pic over sofa hung 6" above top of sofa. But get 3 more of same and tack them 3 across like you show. They look to small to stand alone so add 3. Just 2" between all.

Painting a accent wall where firepl is would make room come together.

Are walls gray? Paint accent wall charcoal.

I think what you have on mantel might be throwing you off. Mirror isn't that bad. But if you want more WOW. Try cut glass look 45" sunburst sold at Z Galleries.

Congratulations! It's beautiful. I like the idea of a mirror over the fireplace but because of what it reflects I would go for a piece of art. Take your time. Save up some fund$ and get used to the room for awhile. Enjoy your new home for a bit.

Those will work while you look for your "ideal" piece of art. I agree that the mirror may be perfect somewhere else - foyer, dining, etc. Its nice but just a tad small and has no "bling!"
