Looks like a Jade plant & looks like sunburn. Where does it live - indoor or out? If SD is for South Dakota I assume it’s indoors. Plants can be sunburned indoors too close to a sunny window. You can break damaged leaves off. You can also pinch that new growth at tips to control height & shape.

San Diego and it has lived outdoor in full sun.

I thought all succulent love full sun and little water?

San Diego full summer sun is too hot! Jade could live outdoors year round there but needs to be protected from hot afternoon sun & reflected heat off a building or fence. They cannot take freezes but San Diego rarely has that, right? What exposure have you had this living in? Sould be moring or filtered afternoon sun. Little water is correct. When leaves feel soft it needs water. Good soaking & drainage. My two jades live on my hot west facing front porch but don’t get direct sun. They are now in my insulated garage as night temps are heading lower & it’ll be too cold when night temps hit freezing or we have frost. . I’m in PNW zone 8

Just my two cents but I have always been told not to remove sunburnt leaves on plants.

I know they look ugly but they act as little umbrellas protecting the other leaves below them, and if you remove them while the plant continues to face the same conditions, then the sun will just burn the next leaves down.

So if you're going to leave the plant where it is, don't remove them! But ideally, move it to somewhere where it just gets morning sun, as @KW PNW Z8 suggested.

@seasiderooftop I haven't removed anything yet. The burned leaves feel fleshy and not dead so I think I will just move it to under an umbrella. Too bad though because next to the front door is such a lovely place for it.

@RoseMe SD You might be able to leave this plant by your front door during fall winter spring but move it during summer months when it’s hot. The answer to that lies in when this sun scorch damage happened. As for removing damaged leaves, up to you & how bad they make the plant look. They may just shrivel up & fall off anyway since they are not able to hold water the way they need to.
