mismatched wood in house

Hi, my parents will be sanding down and refinishing their red oak floors because of some water damage (through insurance) but will not be redoing /painting the doors, trim around the doors, and windows (insurance won't cover this). What color can they get away with on the floor so that this doesn't look bad? Darker? Lighter?
