dadoes, I agree! I was driving when I was listening and I was getting so mad! First, nothing he says backs up his (or Procter & Gamble's) "conclusion". And I put conclusion in quotes b/c frankly, there was none besides "cold water is all you need". I wanted to write to him and tell him that he needs to conduct his research again.

I actually did the survey posted on Tide’s website and explicitly stated that I would not switch to cold because of BO, build up in my machine, and the requirement of using more additives or detergent.

I went to Target yesterday and bought a package of Hanes underwear. The washing instructions were very explicit-use only cold water. I looked at Fruit of the Loom and they also specified cold water only washing. Heck no. I do not wash underwear or socks in cold water. Dress shirts or delicates in tepid water, yes. Everything else is in Hot or very warm water.

...and people wonder why their washing machines are gross with mold and stink. They also wonder why they have out of the blue developed skin rashes and allergies. Think about the crud growing in the washers from liquid detergent and cold water washes. Now, all your laundry items have the mold/stink/residues/build up. etc...embedded into the fabrics. I've lived it with crummy front loaders that would not give me hot washes. 12 years of declined health and unbelieveable stank on clothes and towels. Just say no people. Wash in warm and hot.

My top load Speed Queen reaked of dirty socks & mold until I went back to using powder detergent a few years ago. I will never use a liquid detergent again. But yes, warm or hot water is the way to go.
