the tissue of flower petals is very ephemeral .. some lasting only a day.. in good weather ..

they are made to show themselves in the glory of the sun ... not many are made to take steady pounding by rain ... in other words.. its not just a mum thing ...

many.. if not all are perennial .. in warmer climes .... im surprised you just ripped them out ... though on the other hand.. i dont keep things around that piss me off either.. so if removal made you happy.. all the power to you ...

It's a annual -fall- planting so they were going to get ripped out once faded anyway. I was hoping to at least eek 2 more weeks out of them.

In comparison, just sayin, the summer annuals still remain unfazed and look fab.

This time of the year, I do like to mix things up and have the fall mums, ornamental gourds and kale, etc.

@a1an , my fall mum displays look absolutely terrible from the non-stop rain we’ve had in Michigan. I don’t have any planted in beds, just pots positioned in beds and on my porches. Glad I purchased the inexpensive mums from Home Depot so I didn’t end up wasting a lot of money. My other annuals would still be looking great but for the hungry deer that have devoured every last morsel as they prepare for winter. They’ve even eaten my deer resistant annuals and perennials. I hate them!

A1an, strictly speaking your Chrysanthemums are perennial. In the right climate they have the potential survive for several years.
