I ask because if you are in the USA you can email these photos to your local cooperative extension agent. They work within your county so are very familiar with everything that is going around local to you. They are also a good source of control information.

Are these native persimmons, i.e. Diospyros virginiana? We had one when I was growing up. The fruit withered like that after the first frosts but it didn't affect the taste. Have you tried the fruit? It's a deciduous tree, so the leaves getting marked this late in the season shouldn't matter.

Sara, good to know! Yes, they're native. I haven't tried them yet, but I will. The leaves look now a bit like the leaves on my cherry trees when they were attacked by a fungus, so I wondered if it could be the same thing.

cearbhaill, yes, i'm in the US, and you're right, the extension office here is very helpful! Thank you for the reminder. I'm new to the area and have asked them a lot of questions--not that they ever seem to mind!
