In some cases a special series is made for box store sales, this typically means a unique feature and/or some measure to reduce cost. In the instances where its the same series, no, there is no difference.

The major difference that you will see between a dealer and big box (generally speaking), is the level of knowledge and service. Getting the appropriate glass for your climate. Ensuring that orders are correct. Recommendations on worthwhile options/upgrades. Diagnosing and sourcing service parts down the road. Something as simple as checking a box next to the size stating whether its "RO" or EXACT" can make or break an order. You will be signing off on an order that unless you are an industry pro, you can only hope to know roughly 80% or so of what to look for, and a lot can go wrong in that remaining 20%. As someone that buys windows to install (as opposed to selling them to installers), dealing with competent people can be invaluable.

That is usuallly true but not always. I was just talking a friend/ installer last night where the wrong box was checked ordering Marvin windows. The Home Depot by me has a salesperson that use to work for Andersen and is excellent and is backed by An excellecent Rep from Andersen. You are becoming the contractor once you decide to buy yourself and taking the risk we take. I would take the time to educate yourself since you will be signing off on the order.

I like the Andersen Woodwright and A-Series best in casements . These are available from Home Depot. Do not like Pella or Jeld Wen. I would

also look at Marvin Elevate or Ultima and some of Kolbe’s products.

just remember when you are ordering things on tour own tou are becoming the contractor. Orders will be placed on what infomation you give. It is best if you become the smartest person in the room . Use e-mails to cover your bases or to hang yourself. Double check everything before you sign off.

We’ll so far, the two quotations I’ve received from the dealers have been riddled with errors. Duplicate windows, wrong colors, wrong sizes, etc., so I’ll have to the the checker no matter where I go. I figured I may as well check other options since I’m doing all of the work myself anyway.

The do your homework and go with the best price/ quality. Odering windows is not as simple as you might think if this is a new build.

Unfortunately today it is pot luck almost everywhere. By all means you will want check and double check everything. In my opinion I have found the people in the millwork depts. in my local box stores to be less than knowledgeable and i think the week before they were stocking shelves. I would also agree with toddinmn and steer clear of anything Pella or Jeldwen.
