The wood looks the same to me. If the leaf was down most of the time, it may have faded/aged differently from a top exposed to more light.

Looks quite a bit like cherry. I see the one section where the grain is less figured but I think it's the same stuff. Pretty.

I should have said that this is sanded - so there is no stain on it. Sigrid, I think it is the same wood too - it is just that the leaf has more knots and grain. Fori, my husband thinks cherry as well. I think we are just going to use a natural stain on it and let the wood do its thing! I will try and post a pic when it/they are done! Thank you!

My husband the woodworker and cherry lover also thinks it is cherry, tho perhaps some boards sawn differently. I’m saving the photo because I think his woodworkers group would love to spend a day discussing what kind of wood it might be! If it is cherry, remember it will darken over time with exposure to sunlight, so be prepared for that. Very pretty, good luck!

ngcurt - Thank you for your input! You made me laugh with the woodworkers "discussing" comment! I read about cherry darkening the other day! Here is a picture of how the two tables started - they connect to make a bigger table. I will try and post a picture when they are done!

Glad to give you a chuckle, I can picture them in my mind:) We have American cherry floors, mixed widths of select and clear, no stain at all. Here’s how they’ve darkened in eight years, admittedly very sunny house.

It doesn't look like your table(s) was stained if it's cherry--just age and perhaps aged finish. Maybe a very light stain. Definitely going to be pretty!*

*If you like that color. Some people don't like "orange" wood. Or wood-colored wood. They think it is dated because it isn't gray. They are wrong. :)

Hey - I am going to paint the walls of the house grey/gray - not the furniture! Definitely going to let the wood do its own thing!
