Dining room HELP pls :)

We live in an open concept home. Our dining room (I want to keep it as such) has an open walkway, another pass through to the tv area and an offset window.

It’s really bright and we love that. Any suggestions for making the offset window appear more balanced?

  • do I put a big piece of art to the right of the window?
  • would putting curtains on both sides of the window -smaller on the left, bigger area on the right (pic from Pinterest attached) work?
  • any other ideas/ suggestions.

I should mention we’ll hang a substantially sized light in there.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Is there a view out the window?

Does it work spacewise to turn the table 90 degrees and line it up with the window?

The view out the window is partly the neighbours house and partly an environmental reserve (trees).

If we move the table 90 degrees well completely block the walkway to the rest of the house. I didn’t even think of turning it though, interesting thought!!

How about if the table is diagonal to the room?

Diagonal might work. Biggest potential issue I see is the tripping/kicking hazard posed by the splayed legs on the chairs if the room is a constant traffic path.

I would center the table with window and chandelier turning it on 90 degrees.

    Some decor idea is here

You can also try centering the table and rug on the window, there's still quite a bit of room behind the chair on the left. Generally you want about 36" behind seats to comfortably access them but you can cheat a little if you aren't using that chair regularly. It looks like your light fixture is placed to be centered over a table turned 90 degrees, you may want to consider swagging it so you'll have flexibility with table placement.

If you want it centered, I would try turning the table 90 degrees and centering it on the window. Remember, however, that centering in not carved in stone; not everything needs to be physically centered. The other way to get balance would be to add art as you contemplated in your post. A composition of several same-themed pictures arranged in a balanced but asymmetrical way — small on the left, larger on the right — would counter the need for centering.

Sorry. … centering is not carved…

I think once you hang curtains and artwork you will not be nearly as disturbed by it being off center. I see why it is problematic now though. Maybe just using painter's taple to block off the area that curtains would take up, and the area that artwork to the right of the window would take up and see if you feel any differently about the space. (I think the diagonal table is super strange looking!)

    Thank you all!
Celery that visual is SO helpful, thank you for taking the time to do that.
Mel, Kendrah & Edward your input is especially appreciated.

I’m going to stick with the table placed as it is, nice rich curtains, a big piece of art and a new light.
