So, what do you want to accomplish?

A high quality water softener is $700 for the softener itself.

With markup and install, you could be talking $1200-1800.

It will soften your water and work very reliably. Spending more money on the softener will not make the water "'more soft". Do not buy any of the marketing nonsense from Kinetico about dual tanks, non-electric, backwashing with softened water, etc. None of those things actually matter.

If you want drinking water that's carbon filtered to remove taste, odors, and remove certain nasty stuff like VOC's, that's a couple hundred bucks for a standard carbon cartridge filter that goes under the sink. Generally I say that toilets and such don't need carbon filtered water.

If you really have bought into the "chlorine is bad for you in the shower" nonsense, and want a whole house carbon filter, a backwashing carbon filter can be purchased for about $650. The pair can be purchased together for $1400.

Unless you have known issues with lead, nitrates, etc. (and you probably don't since you are on municipal water) then that's all you need.
