It looks like a wood panel with 1" slats attached to it. Armstrong makes wood ceiling panels, not sure if they make it with 1x1 slats but you can check.

It's not that hard to make something like this in the field (did a drop ceiling over a bar a while back) just a bit time-consuming, you put up panels on the ceilings paint them black, and fill the slats in with whatever spacing you want in between. It looks like they did the same thing in the top picture.
