I'm not a Texan, and don't play one here - but that doesn't remind me (in those two distant photos in which I can't see much clear details) of a Magnolia species.

Looks more like one of the unlobed Quercus sp.

Any chance of additional photos? Closeup of leaf details, buds, and even trunk character would shed more light. Southern Magnolia will have pretty smooth gray bark, unlike most/all Oak species.

It is obviously not in very good health, with all those main branches dying back and a zillion epicormic sprouts.

ya.. i dont play a texan either.. lol ... but its been topped ... its having a hard life ...

could this have been hit with that cold spell TX got??? .. or was it a tree with too much potential planted too close to the building.. and now they have to top it ????

Texas must have had the Winter from he!! last year.

Yea, Im not seeing Magnolia either. the leaves do have an oaky look. My first impression was wind damage, lot of the limbs were broken off.
