The 5' will be tight since most W/D s are 30" wide each as for the depth of the space a simple bi fold door open to have both exposed at the same tim is what I have and my space is 6.5" from the wall to the dooropening no problem My space is wider so I have my central vac hose in the one side an shelves on the other side for linens . I like laundry closets they function well and honestly I see not much reason to have a huge space that is usually used for more than a laundry. I do nee to see your floor plan to really see what the space is you have.

Since the space is tight, look into stackable units. Also, be aware that you need a minimum of a 33 inch depth for washer/dryers, and that's if your dryer vents to the side instead of to the back. This is 33" available space (inside the finished surfaces). We just replaced our stacking units in an existing closet. We had do a lot of research and be careful to buy machines that fit the space. So if you don't want any difficulty you should have even more depth, more like 38". You can find machines that are 27" wide.

Stackables aren't for everyone since some people may have trouble reaching the controls on the top of the dryer, but that way you would also have room for something else in the closet. There is an LG model with controls for both in the middle, but then if one fails I would think you would have more difficulty repairing or replacing just the one unit.

You need to be able to move the washer and dryer out into the room to clean or repair them, plus enough room for a person to scoot behind them. They also need to fit through doorways without hitting the other one.

Make sure you account for any space needed for vent ducting, water pipes and drain. The machines always seem to stick out a few more inches than the specs would make you believe! Also pick your units carefully, as the way some are designed makes them take up more space.
