Need advice on adding shelves

i am trying to find a way to add shelves in a room without a real space for them! we have a fireplace and windows, but i am really missing having shelves. The wall between the fiireplace and windows are also not even! one side is 20 inches and the other is 17 inches! any ideas of what could be done?
