Best approach for mortar repair?

I have some cracks in the mortar above my garage door (see pic below...not the best pic). It's a brick veneer...non-structural and likely caused by the combination of some settling and vibration from the garage door. Can this be handled with a mortar repair caulk or would it be better to clean out the joints a bit and use real mortar?

It would be best to chip out mortar and repoint, but frankly it's a lot of work and the mortar may crack again. I think I'd go with a caulk solution.

You have to make sure you don't use a mortar harder than the brick or you can blow the front of the bricks off. Mortar is not glue; it's a brick bed.

Some building codes allow 3/4" mortar joints maximum. Looks like you're exceeding same.
