Bathroom Tile Layout-Stacked or Bricklay

Hey all-we just got our black hex floors m in, and set the toilet. We had decided that we would do a horizontal stack of white subway tile about 4 1/2 ft up on all the walls. However the wall behind the toilet won’t fit the tiles across like we hoped, it would mean two full tiles in center and two small

cuts on the side tile. ( Or some variation that may look ”off”)

Opt A: dont tile the small bathroom area and do a black slat wall behind the toilet and keep white walls on the side

Opt B: Classic bricklay bathroom rather than horizontal stack (I thought of vertical too but seem to find more pics of horizontal or staggered with the black hex).

When you walk in shelves will be behind the door. The tub and vanity straight ahead with the shower to the right of the tub and the toilet is in its own space, behind this wall on the right, across from the shower. The pic with the canity is just to show you the vanity. It will have a 36x48 framed mirror above and two milk glass pendant lights hanging.

If two full tiles leaves slivers on the ends, use one full tile in the middle which will leave larger cuts on the ends.

The only wall giving you problems is the one directly behind the toilet? I bet that you won't notice it once all the tile is installed. But I also don't think it's a bad idea to do the bricklay pattern. Your hex tiles are modern, your toilet is modern, so balancing them out with the more traditional bricklay tile could be nice. The fact that you're using milkglass lights signals that you want a balance of modern and trad--is that right? What is your shower tile? I think doing a black wall behind the toilet might make it too busy, kinda like how painted accent walls are not a good look anymore.

Yes I was concerned about the wall behind the toilet and any other cuts that may look off that I can’t foresee. For that reason I thought bricklay maybe safer and it does bring balance for sure…I do like the idea of trying the horizontal because it maybe a touch more modern.

The wall and shower tile will all be the same 3x12 white. I will include a pic of that and idea for the light.

Thank you both for the input-that was a good point too about using a single tile in the center with two longer side cuts!

A black slat wall in a bathroom has the potential to be a cleaning nightmare. For a modern style, stacked layout looks great but highlights any issues with the tile not being exactly the same size or the walls not plumb and corners not square

So true about cleaning! Oh I think that does it for me @Lynda Lee -the wall idea is out lol. As for the stack that was what I was concerned about, seeing any imperfections more easily with it stacked. I do love it…its a tough toss up between that and bricklay. I wanted to try something different but maybe this is why so many stick to bricklay!
