Texture for new kitchen soffit over peninsula?

Linda

We are doing a low-budget kitchen update. We started by removing the old soffits and the cabinets that hung above the peninsula. Because the soffit in that area hid a waste pipe that can't be relocated, we had a new bulkhead/soffit built to cover it up.

Scope of the project includes replacing old cabinets with Ikea Sektion Grimslov off-white, making the peninsula deeper (currently it's a paltry 12" deep), keeping the peninsula length at 84". Ceiling height is 96", soffit height is 9" x 19" wide. Also looking at new countertop and backsplash tile.

We have slap brush texture on the ceiling and walls. We are not going to change that (house was built in mid-60s and there's likely asbestos in the mud and we don't want to disturb it).

First photo is the pipe that is now covered up and shows the ceiling texture. Second is the "before" and third is the new soffit.

We're considering making the soffit smooth rather than putting on slap brush texture that would match the wall/ceiling. Would that make it stand out too much? We want it to visually recede as much as it reasonably can. We're hoping to suspend a couple of small pendant lights from the soffit but have only 52" of space between counter & bottom of soffit. I'm going to mock something up to see if that looks reasonable.

I think a smooth surface on the soffit might make it look too contemporary compared to rest of the room. That might be more appropriate for recesssed lights (or no lights at all).

Any thoughts?

The best update for the home is to remove the textured finish off the ceiling. If it doesn't have asbestos, you can wet the ceiling and easily scrape it off. Check YouTube for videos on how to remove.

I dd this one the rest of the ceiling was textured and I just did the soffit smooth finish like the walls but you have textured walls so just copy that I do think the soffit is a bit huge is it neccessary to be 19" wide IMO you keep this as small as possible . I hung pendants for the soffit over the counter but the soffit was not as deep as yours you might need puck lights there and BTW you need pot lights in the kitchen not one center light we did track LED 4000k in this reno since there were budget constraints . Who is designing this renovation ? IMO you need some real help to do this right

We can't scrape off the texture because of asbestos in the drywall mud. We're not into skim coating the ceiling and the walls because of budget. Thanks for the opinions and keep them coming!

I wish we could do recessed lighting but we can't disturb the ceiling because of asbestos. Our deigner has a good understanding of our aesthetic and limitations inherent to a small budget renovation. We're doing this update to please ourselves, knowing that someday when we sell, the buyer is apt to do a gut renovation and whatever we've done is not going to please them.

    Linda,

Last time I went to Ikea (in December), they told me the Grimslov doors were discontinued. You may want to check with them on that.

I saw the message about the IKEA doors. It is possible to get doors for IKEA cabinets from Semi-handmade. They have the sizes for all IKEA cabinets. You can tailor the doors to the style and color you want. Also, rechargeable light bulbs are now available. That means you can install a light with no need to hardware them. I am not sure how long the bulbs last before you have to recharge them, but it might be with looking in to. That way you can put in a pot light in the soffit without having to wire it. You can also use the bulbs in a lamp in a location where a plug is not nearby or it might be fly to see the cord. You can also use them in pendant lights.

Keep all textures the same. If you have textured walls, match the new soffit to the walls. You might consider having your contractor add some wood to the top of the one cabinet so it hits the soffit.
Good luck and enjoy the new kitchen.
