Discharge Pump rattling

There are pipes from our boiler and our HVAC system that run into a pump. The old pump ran quietly every once in awhile. It broke. The HVAC company replaced the pump, but the new one pumps and then there is a loud rattle until 10 seconds before it pumps again. I checked that the discharge pipe wasn't hitting anything, and that it was well connected to the pump. The only thing I can think is that water is draining back from the discharge pipe into the pump. Is that possible? How do I fix that?
