I am confused the night table is too high I do not like all matching bedroom furniture , those prices are very good for all real solid wood IMO bedroom furniture does not get a huge amount of abuse so it is not IMO such a big deal but if you love it get it and since they are making it for you get the night tables to be lower .

im not sure it can be customized but he literally walked me through the steps to build, how long it takes, delivery etc. my guess is i cannot change dimensions but cannot hurt to ask. we def dont abuse furniture. my same furniture i used for 40 years isnt really too bad but it's time to change.

Clearly you can discern quality.

If you can afford, go for it!

If you can't afford it in newly manufactured furniture, scour estate sales, charity shops, garage sales and the internet.

Quality made solid wood, dovetail joints, etc case goods that were owned by previous generations are being given away and sold for a song being younger people prefer the things sold at places like IKEA, etc.

Anything you purchase for those nominal prices second-hand can be easily refinished for even less than what you would purchase something new.

However, if you want something solid wood brand-new and you can afford, by all means, purchase it.

I grew up near where Vaughn-Bassett is made. I have furniture my parents purchased for me from a local store near the factory as a young teen 30 years ago, that has now been my son’s for 18 years. He can tear up some things, but the well made bedroom suite is still going strong. When I married 23 years ago, I bought a bedroom suite from them that looks as good today as the day we bought it. The dovetailed drawers are a huge deal. I don’t see where you mention that they have that or not. And I have not personally inspected the quality of their current offerings, but I can tell you my experience in the past.
As far as the style choices others have commented on, the set you are looking at is a classic style and everything else is just individual taste

I would absolutely not have the nightstand made shorter or cut down.

You could buy a new mattress in a few years that is higher and then your nightstand will be too short and then you are stuck!

It is easier to raise your bed with a bed riser now.

The standard nightstand is 24-28", and a 28" height is smart, to accommodate the thicker and thicker mattresses being made now with all sorts of pads and cushions being put on top of them.

yes dovetail and he kept emphasizing that. i didnt know if that was a big deal. in the past year i had been shopping for bath/kitchen cabinets and they all seemed to have that. even the lower lines. i assumed they were standard in bedrooms too. i guess not. i'm glad to see your VB furniture has lasted a long time. ive basically using my childhood nightstand and dresser over 40 years. nightstand was destroyed by a leaky humidifer but dresser is pretty decent. but its too small with just 3 large drawers. i want more :) plus with bf moving in we want new stuff. also in the showroom i noticed other soft close drawers and they were just horrible. i generally do hate them. even in kitchen/bath cabinets but the VB ones i found very tolerable. and i'm super fussy like that. regarding night stand at 28 inches now i do remember i just have my winkbed on a flat slat foundation. no box spring. so i agree if i ever change beds it may be an issue. i do love the lower mattress that i have now though and i dont see me ever wanting to change it. but you never know.

theres also another issue where i have a built in AC unit and my 20 inch wide night stand fits perfectly between it and the bed and everything is centered great between 2 windows. but ill have to slide the bed down 8 inches (new end table is 28 wide) and things will definitely not be even close to centered. guess ill have to deal with it.

If you look at the different types of joints (called joinery) in furniture construction, dovetail is considered the best, it is the strongest and most refined as well.

Think of it as your fingers interlocking.

Don't just believe the man at the store, do some internet research, there is info online based on literally hundreds of years of experience of carpentry.

This is not rocket science, don't get your head in a tizzy.

Just look it up.
