Thanks for your comment. I forgot to mention that I did try a grey but it really didn't look great so maybe I just didnt go dark enough.

I would look for an exterior grade clear coat (that won't yellow). One that is harder wearing and easier to keep clean than the current finish.

Is there room to install some kind of "deck" boards that wouldn't need painting?

Assuming the risers are the same fir as the treads, remove the paint and leave them naturally exposed. At worst, they will be just as dirty as the treads.

Would tiling them work? All depends on the style of the home but there’s plenty of styles to choose from and can add some interest and color.

Replace with composite decking boards - or, paint black.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. I am late in replying because all your comments went in to Spam for some reason. I think what I will try is repainting white and covering with an exterior grade clear coat so I can just wipe this down as needed. I would not have thought of that so Im glad I posted. Thanks again.
