Help Picking Deck Color

last modified: 3 years ago

Hi, we are building a deck this spring, and we're struggling with which color decking to use. We will be using Azek. We have narrowed it down to 3 options: Kona, English Walnut, and Mahogany. I'm worried the Kona will be too dark, and the mahogany too red. DH is concerned that the Walnut might be too light. The English Walnut and Mahogany will be about 40% more expensive as well (at least, based on our deck guy's rough estimate).

Our house is hardie deep ocean:

If they were all the same price, I'd choose English Walnut--seems the most neutral. But I don't think it's worth 40% more, so I voted for Kona. Once you get your outdoor furniture on your deck, maybe an outdoor rug, you won't notice it at all. The color difference is not big enough to justify the additional cost, IMO.

@jkent9024 Thanks! That particular style (the English Walnut & Mahogany) also look more like wood, so we're not just paying for a color...but I agree it does seem like a substantial price increase for not much value. Our deck will be rather large @ 28x16, so there will be a bit of open decking visible.

    I vote for English Walnut!

I agree 100% with @jkent9024, just not enough difference to justify a 40% difference in price -- that is a LOT. Save your $ and use it for something else you want for the house.

BTW, we are also using Hardie Deep Ocean! Did not know anyone else on the forum was. Cool. Your house is beautiful, but then again, I'm a bit biased. 😁

We have the Azek Mahogany. I was trying to match the stain to our interior mudroom floor. DH was pretty insistent about the Azek grade level he wanted, though, and then had me choose from colors within that grade.

Are your three colors all the same Azek grade i.e. are the Walnut and Mahogany in the same Azek category as the Kona- something to check and I'm sorry I don't know.

Love your house - congratulations! Here's the Mahogany decking - a couple years old now and we also get winter weather.

@barncatz yes, they are different grades. The kona is from their harvest collection (less expensive) and the other two are from their vintage collection. The vintage collection looks more like real wood. I think the mahogany looks great!

@beth H. : thanks! I will look into the acacia... that looks promising! You may have convinced me that mahogany is the way to go otherwise...

Love the mahogany for your blue house.

What are your floor inside ? I happen to like a deck flooring to be as close as possible to the interior flooring the deck than looks like a part of the house .BTW I would not do the jailh ouse railing a nice glass would look a lot better IMO.

All of this looks lighter in this photo than it does in person, but our interior floors are close to the English walnut. Our floor is a bit darker.
As for a glass railing...I don't know how I would like that in our climate. Seems like I'd always be cleaning it.

Your house is beautiful! I am looking at Azek decks too— what color did you end up going with?

@H D Thank you! We went with English Walnut. We're really happy with how it turned out. This is before the drink rail was installed.

Your deck is gorgeous, thanks for posting! English Walnut is one of my top possibilities so I really appreciate seeing this! I like how there is some variation in color, seems more realistic. Looks great with your blue siding. TY!!!

@anj_p Thank you so much for posting a photo of your finished deck! It looks SO beautiful! We just ordered the English Walnut for our ADU in Ojai and I am really excited now after seeing your photo. I love the variation of color in the English Walnut, which makes it look like real wood. And the fact that there is zero maintenance makes it worth EVERY PENNY! Fantastic choice! Congratulations!

We are in the color selection process and I was wondering if the English walnut looks like it’s oxidizing or slightly pink or purple once the entire deck is installed? Do you notice this?

Susan, no, it doesn't look pink or purple at all. We're really happy with it.
