Will you be painting over the new caulking or just leaving it as is?

Some pictures of the areas you're working on would be helpful. If the caulk is peeling off, I would assume you also have peeling paint? Or is your trim stained and clear coated?

I would not discourage you from caulking everything, but it is usually not the first step of the process.

My husband and & I are NEARING the completion of a 6K remodel. I have caulked all the trim (base, casing, crown, chair rail - hundreds of feet)! Ours is painted. I wouldn't use anything made by DAP, or any other brand you can buy at a big box store.

My favorite caulk is PPG Top Gun 400. I buy it by the case. Last fall, it was still about $4 per 10 oz tube; comes in white or clear. Google for a PPG dealer near you. Usually more of a warehouse type place for painting contractors, but they also sell to the public.

A larger gun will be awkward to use inside. The large guns & tubes of caulk are meant for exterior projects.

Why are you using SO much caulk? Does some of your trim need to be re-attached? Are the walls out of square in places? Oversized gaps need to be filled with backer rod before caulking.

One other thing - is your trim moving due to temperature and humidity swings in the house?

thank you Mike and Elizabeth. Won't paint in the near future as our kids are still young and expect them to destroy the walls, we'll consider painting maybe in 3-4 years. We have 32 windows in this house, I used up two just to caulk the six windows in our dining room (these are 88 inches in height). In the winter time we get a lot of cold breeze from the window, caulk around all the windows should help eliminate some of the cold air. I'll look into PPG Top Gun400 and see where I can buy them. @First home, ok I get it! Our first home was an early 1900's 4 square in North Dakota. I think I remember heating bills during Jan/Feb would run as high as $600 - in the 1980's!!

Backer rod comes in several sizes, and will help to stop drafts and save on the amount of caulking you use. Backer rod and caulk together will be more effective than caulk alone.

I would also consider some sort of inside storm window. Look for ideas on Pinterest of just google. Good luck!

gaps on baseboars are between 1-2mm in kost spots, will caulk be sufficient?

we are not removing old caulk from top of window drames or within the frame itself since there isn’t much left. Is the PPG product suitable doe all our 3 uses?

If it's only 1 -2 mm, caulk alone will work. Caulk needs a "clean, dry surface" to adhere properly. If the paint or finish is flaking off, it will continue to do so, and lift the caulk, as well.

Usually paintable caulk is used. paintable caulk

@First home, I would say "no". It's not logical to purposely do a project the wrong way, and expect it to last.

I'll second the recommendation for TopGun 400. Skip the DAP.

Oddly enough I can't find Top gun 400 anywhere - website says home depot and some neighboring stores in my zip code but nobody carries it. If you guys have seen it in your area, what's the price so I can compare to an online price? Thanks
