What appliances have a permanent residence on your kitchen counters?

Montecito Guest House · More Info

Our microwave, coffee and teapot have a permanent place on our kitchen counters, but putting the toaster away is a constant debate in our home, especially with limited counter space. Whether you have limited or expansive space, what appliances do you keep on the counter?

Put everything away you don’t use and the ones you use daily, that will save a little time when you are getting prepped for meals. It gets to be routine.

We installed an appliance cabinet that houses our toaster, electric kettle and blender, all for use while in the cabinet. Only appliances left out our Jura coffee maker and toaster oven/air fryer. Microwave is a drawer in the island.

Toaster, toaster oven, coffee maker (very small 5 cup) coffee grinder. Only put away item is food processor. Not much need for prep space to open and microwave frozen foods..

I didn't want any permanent countertop appliances when I began my reno, except for a coffee maker. But I got so many good layout ideas here that my final plan has plenty of counterspace. (Friends tease me about needing to fill up my empty counterspace - and my kitchen is not that big, LOL.) So here's my list:

    • Coffee maker (upgraded last year from drip to semi-auto, hallelujah!)
    • Electric kettle and coffee grinder (both within a countertop cabinets with a tambour door)
    • Cuisinart CSO (combi-steam oven, i.e., also a toaster)
    • Microwave
    • Stand mixer
    • Aarke soda maker (not really an appliance, but it's dead sexy so I'm counting it!)

These are on three different walls, so my counters still look wide-open. Coffee appliances are on one wall of the kitchen; the steam-toaster combi is an an opposite wall; and the MW and mixer are on a pantry/fridge wall that faces the open side of my U-shaped cabinet/counter layout.

My Cuisinart air fryer toaster oven and my Keurig Mini are the only appliances on my counters. I haven't used a toaster in over 30 years. I've always used a toaster oven instead.

When we remodeled our kitchen, I put in the dreaded over-the-range microwave. I hate it, but I hate microwaves on the counter even more and I didn't have any place to put in a built-in microwave.

Drip coffee maker, milk frother/heater, Breville toaster oven.

    Keurig & toaster.

No appliances are on the counter. Coffee station is behind folding doors, toaster oven and microwave are in the pantry. I do have the functional but controversial dish drainer sitting there ruining my minimalism.

coffee maker, electric water heater, toaster, soda stream

electric kettle, big kitchen aid mixer, food processor, coffee grinder, and a hangy up toaster oven that sits pretty close to the counter but not on it.

Keurig, toaster, can opener- I wish I had an appliance cabinet to hide those things. Microwave is in an opening in the island.

I have one of those lazy susan corner cabinets that has all my appliances. I keep the toaster in a two inch high tupperware box, just pull that out cook my toast and pop it back into the cabinet. Don't have to worry about crumbs. I only have my coffee pot on the counter

Only the cobalt blue kitchen aid mixer gets to live outside on the counter. The microwave is built in and the toaster only gets to come out to visit and then has to go back home inside the cabinets.

Small kitchen with little storage in a 1929 cottage. Coffee maker and small toaster live on the counter in separate corners. I don’t think I’d ever hide these away because they are used daily. The microwave sits on a baker’s rack along with storage baskets and the Kitchenaid mixer. The food processor, coffee grinder, and blender are stowed in the pantry.

My cobalt blue mixer and my food processor. The mixer is in transit to Kitchenaid for a repair and the counter looks NAKED!

Electric tea kettle and small TV. I decorate with blown glass around the kitchen.

Anything I use on a near daily basis is left on the counters: large microwave, toaster oven and a tea kettle on the stove. Any item not used on the regular are stored away since I don't have a lot of counter space. I use a lower corner lazy susan space for most small appliances. I have a corner "garage" for the Keurig and Kitchen Aid stand mixer.

Air Fryer in deep corner and Keurig (love this new brewer because it doesn’t take up as much room. Microwave is built in above oven. Appliance garage holds Toaster, Toaster oven, and Air popper. Our house was built in 1999 when they still had the appliance garages. I love the new big pull out cabinets they have for all your appliances now.

toaster, coffee maker, kitchenaide mixer and air fryer. Thinking of moving the air fryer to the pantry. Help

Toaster and stand mixer. Switched to pour-over coffee and got rid of the coffee maker—the electric kettle, scale and burr grinder get stored away right after my morning caffeine fix. Better coffee AND less clutter: now that’s what I call a win-win.

Toaster oven, coffeemaker, hot pot and large mixer. All other smaller appliances stored in cabinets. It’s a matter of convenience and the mixer is used often and too bulky and heavy to be lifting from the counter.

Just the air fryer on my kitchen counter. The coffee maker on the butler's pantry counter. These are appliances we use daily. The rest of my appliances are inside my pantry and/ or cabinetry.

I was working 3 states away when bought house and remodeled kitchen. Boy, did I make mistakes. It is small so counter space is limited. I seldom use the oven so have toaster oven out, crock with utinsels, microwave. I keep cast iron skillet on stove top (use it everyday). My dream is to have deep pantry where I could keep toaster oven, have a spot for microwave. And NOTHING but utinsel crock out.

agree,my microwave is on outside table

Coffee maker, electric tea kettle, and Breville toaster oven are all used multiple times a day and live on the kitchen counters. KitchenAid mixer lives on counter in the mudroom/pantry. We don’t have much counter space so pared it down as much as possible (we also don’t have the cabinet space to hide each of these things away, even if we wanted to).

Toaster oven and Keurig. Does the dish drain count, too?

Nothing on the kitchen counter so that the kitchen looks nice in our open floor plan. KitchenAid mixer, coffee maker and toaster are all in the pantry.

Coffee maker and accessories on the coffee/wine bar. Toaster and toaster oven in main kitchen area. Microwave is built-in. Those are the small appliances that we use all day, every day. All other appliances are stored in closed cabinets and taken out occasionally, as needed.

I have tons of counter space, but I love clean & organized. So only my Keurig is on the counter. It’s under the cabinets pushed into my corner nook. Toaster, can opener, slow cooker, bread maker all stay in pantry. I love farm animals, so I do have a few roosters hanging out. Microwave is built into my 8’x4’ island. Thought it was built in too low, but now I love it. Out of the way, but just across from my big farmhouse sink.

    Brevile toaster oven

Espresso machine and kitchen aid mixer and they’re both beautiful and use them daily!

Zero appliances on my counter tops. I have a piece of furniture that serves as a coffee bar near the breakfast room. It is so visitors have everything they need for a cup of coffee, tea, hot coco without rummaging through the kitchen for stuff. We use the blender and toaster often, but each have their place in the pantry.

    Everything coffee

I have everything on my counters! I have no other room for it but I am in the process of reorganizing (slow but steady). Therefore, I have Keurig and mug tree, toaster, blender, food processor (in corner hidden by snacks in front of it). The crockpot is NOT on the counter but in a lower cabinet.

    Toaster and coffee pot

Kitchen Aid mixer, ice maker for cocktails, and Nespresso coffee!

The toaster, electric kettle, and the kitchen aid mixer live out on the counters. The toaster and the kettle are used every day, sometimes more than once so leaving them out is done for convenience. They don't take up much space either. The mixer is just too big and heavy to store anywhere else. It sits out with a cover on it and doesn't bother me.

Espresso machine and coffee grinder in the butler’s pantry and an electric teapot in the main kitchen all other appliances are stored behind closed doors. I hate cluttered counters.

coffee maker and toaster. nowhere else to put them, and wouldn't want to take them in and out every day even if there was a place for them.

None. I have a small kitchen, 11X12 with cabinetry on only 2 walls. And when I remodeled it in 2019 I wanted the counters to be clutter free. After all, I was spending a bunch of money on the marble counters and marble slab backsplash up to the ceiling, and wanted to be able to enjoy them without distraction. I wouldn't be able to do this, if there were more than my husband and I living here.

So the microwave is next to the pantry cabinet, inside a lower cabinet, on a pull-out shelf. I have to plug it in each time I use it, but that's only to reheat leftovers. I use an electric hot water maker for coffee and hot chocolate for breakfast or tea in the afternoon. I use a single-serve porcelain funnel for my one cup a day. The hot water maker and the blender are stored inside one of the 4 deep drawers on either side of the cooktop.

The only things on the counters are mostly decorative and my laptop.

New Cosori air fryer/toaster oven (to replace my toaster and air fryer). Instant Pot sits in a deep corner beside it. (Put away my Kitchen Aid mixer due to lack of daily use). Both along a wall hidden out of vision. I look at a kitchen as an area that works hard and not so much as a showcase area. :))

Only coffee pot and tea kettle (use both several times a day). Everything else goes onto sliding shelves in lower cabinets (weekly use items) or into pantry (occasional use items). Microwave is built in above the oven.

i ’prefer’ clear looking counters but have my Keurig coffee maker next to the sink (easy refil), a wicker tray with a couple of mugs & coffee making essentials. In nearby corner is my instant pot which earned a counter spot & replaced the kitchen aid mixer.

    Only the coffee maker.

Coffee maker and burr grinder. Crockpot in front of blender in the corner. Waffle iron (used often for chaffles). That doesn't sound like much (and I might put the blender away until summer when it gets used for icy boat-drinks). But don't let lack of appliances imply I have clear counters! I have currently six Torani coffee syrups, two spice organizers, two utensil crocks, a knife block, paper towel upright, the drip-dry mat, and a large basket of snacks. Lots of counter space and not much pantry here!

Coffee maker, electric tea kettle and toaster are on a part of the counter that has stowaway doors so I can cover that area up if I want to. But frankly, the doors stay open most of the time. I have added an air fryer to my butlers pantry counter. The two microwaves are both built in. One drawer in the kitchen and on a shelf in the pantry.

I don't drink coffee, and so I do not need a "caffeine fix" in the morning. Sometimes I will drink one cup of tea in the morning, but sometimes I forget, and it seems not to matter. I would hate to be addicted to caffeine. I think the Mormons got this one right.

Here's what I do have on my counters in L.A.:

    • Kitchenaide stand mixer
    • Vitamix blender
    • Toaster oven (I make toast in it, so no need for a separate toaster)
    • Foodsaver
    • Duxtop portable induction burner

I bought the portable induction burner to find out whether I like induction cooking - I don't. But I do store my Fagor pressure cooker on it because that is the only pan that I like to use with induction, partly because the burner has a timer and turns itself off.

In addition, I have an IKEA kitchen cart that holds my Avantco meat slicer (which is quite heavy). There is no room for anything else on top of the cart, and the cart is 33½" high, which is a better height than my counters, which are 36½" high.

In my Cathedral City kitchen (which is way smaller), I have a lot more appliances because I have nowhere else to store them:

    • Cuisinart meat slicer (which I use mainly for bread)
    • Foodsaver (behind the meat slicer)
    • Chef's Choice knife sharpener (I use whetstones in L.A.)
    • Oster Blender (makes better smoothies/shakes than the more expensive Vitamix)
    • Medium size food processor (forget the brand)
    • Toaster oven

I would prefer to store the food processor in a cabinet, and it's not that heavy, unlike the one I have in L.A., which I store in the kitchen cart below the meat slicer. I would also prefer to store the knife sharpener somewhere else, but at least it does not take up much space. I use the blender almost every day, and so it needs to stay out.

Here's a sketch of the kitchen, done by the cabinet company, showing preliminary replacement cabinets:

This will give you an idea of how small it is.
