Cabinets like DeVOL in Southern California?

Hi everyone!

We're doing a kitchen remodel to the studs in a 1928 Spanish Revival bungalow (too much damage to the plaster walls, electrical needs updating, etc).

We're looking to keep a vintage look consistent with a kitchen occasionally tweaked over time.

I love the look of deVOL and similar -- it would work, for example, with the style of our original cabinets in the hallway and in our laundry area. Inset, mix of shaker & plain fronts.

Our current cabinets are, I suspect, original, and after nearly a hundred years the lowers are falling apart. We also have a Hoosier that we bought about 12 years ago that we're using in lieu of cabinets along one wall. Planning on selling that, but might want to incorporate something that looks similar but functions better.

We want to find cabinets that will outlive us.

We intend on staying in the house (we love our little house) and only want to remodel once. We've lived in the house 16 years so far. :)

Suggestions?

PS -- we're refurbishing & keeping the stove!

Do you have access to any amish/mennonite cabinetmakers there? I know a lot of them do a plain and simple type of style and they probably could work in some customizations so the cabinets go straight to the floor and look fully built in.

Another option is finding a local custom cabinetmaker. I found one who likes my old house style and I can pretty much draw what I want and he'll build it. As long as there is crystal clear communications and you do some homework so you refer to the right terminology, you should be able to get what you want.

Last, we have a Chambers range, yours looks to be a similar vintage. The old ranges are pretty fun.

I don't think we have any Amish/Mennonite cabinetmakers. I've found some online, of course.

I'd love to get some recommendations from folks who've actually used some of the local cabinetmakers. It's hard to tell who's really good or not just from Yelp etc.

My biggest fear with this is that we'll end up paying a lot and it *not* working out, you know?

The stove is a 1950s Wedgewood. :)

To make sure you get ” what you want“ you first have to know exactly what it is that you want an be able to communicate that to who ever is diong the work. Part of that is deciding how close to the ”deVOL” look you want to get and what budget you are willing to commit to to achive that. To me their cabinets are inset shaker cabinets with a few details that distinguish their brand. One would be the porpotions meaning the width of the stiles and rails on the doors themselves, running the vertical face frame members to the ground to create a ”leg” effect, the color palette they use which is also brush-painted and things like oak dove-tail drawers and trim moldings. I have done the ”Chalon” Eniglish kitchen which is more difficult than this because of their unique ”chipped paint finish” but it‘s about being able to find someone willing to go that litte extra and you being able to let them know what that is. There are so many cabinet people here in LA but most will only want to do what they do or be seriously overpriced.

TLDR: Does anyone know any cabinet makers in the Los Angeles area who build a quality, long-lasting product who are open to making very similar to a deVOL shaker kitchen including the brush painting?

When shipping, customs, & installation is included deVOL will end up being a bit more than we want to spend (goal is under $50k on cabinets & installation).

stephcat, have you ever watched Restored with Brett Waterman? He's out in the IE (Riverside, Redlands area) He has a cabinet maker that does all of his spanish style makeovers. (And they are beautifully done) I know for those cabs he gets around 20-30K, but they are completely authentic, solid wood, beautifully painted, fully inset, etc.

This style kitchen also English by ”Chalon” can work with that style house. Considered one on the top kitchen lines in the UK. it’s much harder to pull off than deVOL. Took me quite a while to get it right. It has a unique multi-step hand painted finish.
