Awkward kitchen layout

We’re working with a smaller kitchen as well as a wall that separates it from the living room. My vision is to knock down some of the cabinet-wall to open up the space and maybe move those upper cabinets by lowering the existing bar and making it storage space.

Our family really doesn’t need a bar of any kind. So my question is: how can we design the new counter top space in a way that’s not awkward with the living room? I imagine it would be weird to have a couch under the counter…but I’m struggling to find ideas on layouts online.

Any ideas are welcome! including floorplan suggestions, etc. as this is our first rodeo!

You may end up with something like this. We are doing a remodel to lower the high bar countertop. I’ll probably leave a high counter on the wall behind the couch, but with no overhang. Not ideal, but our living area is not big, nor is the kitchen.

You are busy and owe no one here on the forum an explanation for the condition of your kitchen. I'm sorry for the snarky comment, your home is lovely just the way it looks today.

I think you will have a tough time getting enough storage and having a workable layout if you knock down that wall. You won't have any counterspace left. The space you have now is less than functional as well (not enough counter next to the sink, and the counter you do have is not where it should be to function best. Fridge and range are too close together).

You may have options if you're willing to do a full remodel, but I don't think taking out that wall will make your kitchen better. Where does the door go?
