Remove drywall or frame over it.

I have a basement closet without a door. The opening is 44 inches wide, but it is thicker than 2 x 4. It might be framed with 2x6, I don't know. I want to frame the opening smaller for a 30 inch door. Should I remove the existing drywall on the edges, or can I nail the new stud right through the drywall into the stud? I'm goining to use regular 2x4 framing, so the inside of the closet wall won't be all the same width, which is fine with me. I don't want to tear the whole section of the wall down and make more work. I'm doing the framing and hiring out the drywall, most likely.
