Thermostat for New HVAC

I'm going to get a new Trane XL14c Hybrid system installed next month. The installing company quoted on a Trane 724 thermostat for installation. I'm seeing some not so good reviews on that thermostat.

Another company quoted on a Honeywell 8000 which seems to be better received.

I don't need anything very fancy in a thermostat; just something that I can program to drop a couple of degrees at night and warm back up before we get up.

Any thoughts on what thermostat might be good for us?

Make sure your thermostat and outside temperature sensor will combine to automatically select which source of heat to operate when the temperature is below or above the "crossover temperature."

Both of the thermostats have WiFi capability and can be connected to an outdoor temperature sensor. You are probably better off getting the Honeywell Home thermostat. If you ever have a question or problem you will likely get better support from Residio which is the company who purchased the Honeywell thermostat division.

Whatever you get you want an outdoor temperature sensor and it should not be hit with direct sunlight. Temperatures are always measured in the shade.

Just to add, WiFi is not required with some units. My Carrier has an optional outdoor temp sensor that is hard wire to the unit and sensed by the thermostat. My thermostat is not Carrier.

The contractor included a Honeywell VisionPRO 8000 (TH8321WF1001) with my Trane XR17 system installed a couple months ago. It has a large array of setup parameters including several related to control of system stages. 7-day 4-period programmming, although I'm not doing setbacks. Supports an outdoor temp sensor (and several other kinds of temp sensors, although only one choice can be installed) or can reference an online source (which isn't identified) for a "local" ambient.

Have you had any problems with the Honeywell 8000? Something common that I have seen about the Trane 724 is that there can be a problem with it staying connected

I have the Honeywell T10 Pro THX321WFS2001W/U which is working great. I upgraded from the T6 Pro TH6320WF2003/Uwhich also worked well. It was much more difficult to get the T6 Pro wi-fi configured; the T10 Pro was a breeze. The T10 Pro menus are also much clearer.

(On Amazon:) The THX321WFS2001W includes a remote sensor but you can buy the T10 Pro without the remote sensor as the THX321WF2003W.

Both the T6 and T10 can grab the outside temperature from the Internet so you don't need to connect a sensor.
