Electric radiant heat with engineered hardwood

I’m looking to install electric radiant heat throughout the house of about 2000 square feet with 10 thermostats. I already bought 2000 square foot of engineered wood, found a contractor that was going to do the work and then he’s ghosting me. So now I have to find another contractor.

I’m curious what you think about electric radiant heat under hardwood. I already confirmed with both manufacturers that the heated wires from nuheat should work fine under wood.

I’m wondering if I would get better heat if using hydronic, but the problem is this is an existing home so they need to do the demo work.

    I do not think you will get much heat at all from any type wood flooring, engineered or solid. Wood is a poor conductor for heat.

    What happens if I place self leveling compound over the wires, would that work?

    If you want to avoid disasters, always consult the manufacturer - in writing!

    I don’t think you have a great strategy if you plan using electric wires under an insulator (wood).

    A better strategy would be to install close spaced low temperature hydronic tubing with water supplied by a heat pump for in-floor radiant and hydronic panel radiant for both a quick shift in temperature as well as for hydronic air-conditioning. The heat pump could also provide most of your domestic hot water.

    It might be more expensive up front but would be more efficient and might save money in the long run.

    From a thermodynamics standpoint, the wood flooring may slow the transfer of heat a bit, which will result in a little more lag, but heat is not going to be "lost." My neighbor and I have essentially the same house design, with hydronic heating of bare concrete floors downstairs and plywood subfloors with carpeting upstairs. About a year ago my neighbor replaced all his carpeting upstairs with engineered flooring and has reported no problems. With any radiant heating there is always a lag as the heat source first heats up the surrrounding materials, and it can be a long time for concrete to heat back up once it's cooled. In fact, if I lose power for an extended period of time in winter the house cools slowly, but it can take almost 8 hours for the house to get back up to normal temperature when the power comes back on. That's why we don't have a night setback thermostat since the swings in temp are so slow. Having said that, I don't think what you're contemplating will create major problems and should work ok, and you may have less lag with your setup than I do with my concrete floors.

    I guess with electric radiant heat over concrete and wood isn’t going to make the room feel much difference I guess? And it isn’t worth it probably other wan keeping your feet warm when walking

    Electric radiant will cost a fortune to install and use for 2000 sf. And won’t really heat your home. You still need a standard HVAC system. No wood manufacturer will warrant their product for use over it either. It runs too high in temperature.

    HU- The point of radiant is not to keep your feet warm; it's to slowly and evenly release heat to keep the house warm.

    Electric will warm your floors, but not heat the house very much. But it will feel nice. However, depending on where you live it could be astronomically expensive to run 2000/sf of electric radiant. Presumably you have an existing forced-air heating system to be the main source of heat in the home? Hydronic would be a more appropriate use for a project this size, but as you point out, this requires more labor and demo. Double check with the manufacturers of both the electric radiant and the engineered flooring. But again, before you do this, do some extensive research on electricity rates. It's not uncommon to spend over $100+ a month in some parts of the country just to heat a small bathroom with electric. It would be awful to spend all this money to install 10 heating zones and then not be able to use it the way you intended.

    We have heat only under our bathroom tile floor, love it. Our engineered wood floors have never felt even cool, always nice and room temperature. I grew up in Scandinavia where heated floors have been the norm for decades....only tile was the case then also.

    I've got hydronic heat in gypcrete with various floors over it: rubber, tile, vinyl, engineered wood. I've also got bare concrete in a couple of places. None of it has any problem radiating.
