Brightening up a dated kitchen

last modified: 4 years ago

We purchased a home in California, built in 1987, whose kitchen has the original cabinets (they were painted white), tan and brown granite countertops, beige and brown terrazzo tile floors (throughout the house) and stainless steel appliances. The kitchen abuts the family room (open floor plan) which has a large contemporary white leather sectional, a blue, gray and ivory transitional area rug, white fireplace, large rectangular glass coffee table, and a large custom contemporary abstract painting above the sofa. The home is located near the coast, so we have a coastal theme going with blues and white. I would like to break up the drabness of the kitchen by adding a washable area rug, but not sure if I should go with a blue pattern in its entirety, or a more traditional pattern that has some beiges, corals and a blue border. We have a light blue enamel tea kettle sitting on the stove top.
