What are your goals for this kitchen? What are your goals for an island? Where is the dining space, and what are your needs for it?

In your second drawing you're showing an office space at the bottom. If you don't have a doorway from the kitchen to the office space you have created an opportunity for a U-shaped kitchen which is a popular and functional layout. Could you make the middle part of the bay a slider? I imagine you want to have a way to get from the kitchen to the back yard.

There isn't a need for an island if you have a way to configure a functional plan without one. Instead of focusing on getting an island, focus on how many linear feet of counter space you can get with your layout, and placing your sink and stovetop with 2-3 feet of counter next to them on both sides, which is very functional.

If I read your plan correctly, your kitchen is 11 feet wide. There is no way an island will work in a space this narrow, even if all the cabinets and counter were on one wall. Perhaps a peninsula would work better, with seating on one side.

Not all Kitchens can support an island. My Kitchen is 11'0" deep and I tried for so long to shoehorn in an island, but in the end I accepted the inevitable -- any Kitchen narrower than around 12'6" is just too narrow to get a functional/useful island and still have enough room to be able to maneuver around the island and through the Kitchen.

I ended up with a shallow "U" with two open peninsulas (one each leg of the "U") with seating for 2 on one peninsula and no seats on the other (it was on a busy aisle and I wanted more space inside the "U"). There is also a row of cabinets opposite the base of "U".

I absolutely LOVE my Kitchen and am so glad that the folks here patiently worked with me to help me realize a functional/useful island just wasn't possible with my Kitchen.

That said, if you are OK with a very narrow island and narrow aisles, an island can be shoehorned into your Kitchen. Personally, I do not recommend it, but it's your Kitchen.

(1) What's your family composition? Children? (If so, I feel even more strongly about not recommending an island since children are active and running around and it can be an issue with narrow aisles.)

(2) How high off the floor are your bay windows?

(3) How deep is the bay window well? It looks like 18", but when "box counting", guessing partial boxes is guessing game. (That's why we request ALL dimensions be clearly labeled, even when using graph paper and to-scale. A scale of 1 box = 1' is even worse for estimation -- 1 box = 6" is much better.)

(4) Does the office have another door? If not, could one be added on another wall?

(5) Do you have a separate Dining Room? Or, is this your only table space?

FYI...here's my Kitchen, in case it helps you. As I said, I love it! I keep telling my DH that it's going with us when we move!

The shallow "U" helps protect anyone prepping and/or cooking and/or baking from through-traffic (the Dining Room is on the left, the Family Room & Garage are on the right, and the Foyer is "below" the Kitchen)

(We also ended up having to build out the back wall 6" to hide some plumbing that couldn't be easily moved -- I now have a Kitchen 10'6" deep -- but that was discovered after we finalized the design and had no bearing on the layout decisions.)

The kitchen in our "new to us" house is 18'4"L x 11"D with an island and I LOVE the layout (yes, the kitchen is from '93 and will be redone in the future). The island layout works really well because the traffic flow through the kitchen (we have 6 entry points!!!) is on the backside of the island, save for the door going out to the deck. We don't have seating on the backside, there's wraparound seating at the end.
