Well, your math is off. It's 4 yards by 15 yards which equals 60 square yards. 60 X 35 = 2100 ounces. 2100 divided by 16 ounces in a pound equals 131.25 pounds.

I can't imagine an open space that is min 15'x50' that is not a bowling alley or airplane hanger. But if you haven't done this before, consider that a loop carpet, with some traffic near the edges, will "unravel" when it does not have a binding.

It's an unusual but lovely space. I've been using a similar carpet situation with a runner for a couple years and it's held up. I live alone, so it doesn't get a lot of wear and tear. I just don't have the budget, and would rather put the money I have into the kitchen. There are a number of architectural details, and nice furniture pieces that no one will notice the carpet. I think it's a practical solution for large open spaces of hardwood flooring. People have large pieces of carpet bound for area rugs all the time. I don't like the look of the binding, Instead, I've added 2" wide Gorilla tape around the underneath edge. Prevents almost all of the fraying, & a plush carpet edge lays down nicely.

A bigger problem than the weight of the carpet for moving, will be 2' feet in diameter and 12' long will NOT bend, so you will need to check your stairway and hallway clearance where you need to turn.

You cn have that carpet bound for not much money.

Mary Elizabeth, thanks for the bending concern...logistic issues are the things that I need help with. I have a modern condo in historic romanesque building, with a small-ish elevator, so anything >8ft needs to go up the stairs. I think I'm going to hire movers, - they got my 12 x 3 x 200 lb leather sofa up the stairs so they likely can handle a unbendable rug....There are 2 stairs so I may send them up the larger one to be safe.

The space isn't giant, but is larger than 12x45, those are just the dimensions for the area rug. It's an open living/bedroom/kitchen space with 15h x 40L windows, not in, but under a turret, so I'm looking to keep a the space continuous as much as possible, while considering access. Yvonne, I wish I could have it in a simple bound, but the need for the area rug came up unexpectedly and I'm not going to spend the money on this project. I will keep that in mind though. It's a large and unique space, so everything I've done has had to be large and custom, and can completely empty my pocket book.

The oz. you quoted is just the face weight of the fiber and doesn't include the backings and the glue involved in making the carpet. That will make the roll much larger and heavier.

That’s going to be 600-1000 pounds. And the .5 stuff doubles as window sheers, not really a good floor covering. The backing is where the weight is. Carpet is .5-3 lbs per square foot. Just ask any demolition specialist. It’s why they cut it into small little strips. It’s heavy stuff.

I'm going to respectfully disagree with you. We just had about 80 square yards installed last week and it was done by one man. He brought it in the house and installed it himself, so I don't think it was 600 pounds.
