Refresh Brick Ranch

last modified: 4 years ago

How would y'all update this house, and where would you start. Paint brink (trying not to)? Limewash? Remove pergola? Lighting? Windows/shutters? Build out walled seating area? Right now, just update/landscape— trying to start somewhere and build out over time.

Unfortunately the tree is in the wrong place. Much too close to the house. I would prune it to bring it back in size or remove it.

I would not do anything to the brick. Look to improving the landscape.

We do have a landscape design in progress. She can mock up exterior changes if we ask for them, and hoping for ideas!

I would consider limewashing the brick pillars by the front door as the brick doesn't match the brick on your home. What is happening with the whitish brick to the right of the front door? Was there a patch? Does it match the rest of the brick on the house?

It's a good idea to start with the landscaping. Don't skimp - it can dramatically improve your curb appeal!

Another vote for white washing the brick. Does the front get fierce afternoon sun? Would you actually sit out front and relax under the pergola? Looks like there may be a Mountain View from the back.

The entry portico is a bit overpowering and looks like it should be over a patio at the back of the house, not in front. Removal of the brick columns and installation of some different, more pillar- like supports could change the vibe. I find the pergola redundant. Do you have a patio in the back where it could be used? It is taking the focus off the entry and looks like an afterthought.

It looks like there is a brick patch in the front, which doesn’t match the majority of the brick. I would consider a limewash for that main reason. Agree with @decoenthusiaste that the pergola doesn’t work there. Love the blue door!

Agree with many of these! We do have a fabulous backyard, with its own pergola, which is definitely why the front yard has been neglected by previous owners.

I think it’s a good comment if we would actually use a front area- probably not. None of our neighbors do the front yard thing, it’s a bit exposed out there.

The brick patch (we think) was maybe where a vine or plant was? It’s hard to tell, the bricks are the same, but we got advice to chemical wash (or pressure wash like mentioned here) if we keep the brick.

Love the whitewash the pillars idea! I didn't even realize they were a different brick eek. And yeah the pergola can go, doesn’t do anything, landscaping would add much more.

Remove the two pergolas, and the severely pruned shrubs. Clad the brick pillars in wood. Repaint the eaves and trim a creamy white.

I think Maureen’s first and third pictures are perfect for your house. I especially like the third one. It would make a huge difference redoing your pillars that way … much more balanced and organic.

Limewash the brick and stain the wood.
