Hi, please help I am scared of killing my second albo cutting with root rot! I have its aerial root sitting above the aroid chunky mix as I am terrified it will rot like my previous one in the ground. All the healthy soil roots come off this aerial, so its kind of hovering above the mix supported by a stake. Can it sit like this long term? It doesnt look ideal. The aerial root is not flexible so I cannot wind it on top of the soil.
You have a mallet cutting with an adventitious root, and what you have created is a viable solution, even if not the best. I'll describe what I would do, then offer an alternate because I'm guessing you would have enough faith (in what I recount) to do what I first describe.
I would first cut the leaf across the veins so it has 1/4-1/3 its current surface area. Then, I would reduce the length of the adventitious root (with a very sharp tool) so the node from which the leaf and adventitious root emanates can be situated atop of the grow medium. I would then use moist sphagnum moss (not peat moss)
to cover the node, then cover the top of the moist medium with a piece of Saran Wrap or its equal.
Reducing the surface of the leaf alleviates the demand that the roots work well enough to keep the entire leaf hydrated. It also reduces the potentiality of the entire propagule collapsing by way of the leaf being shed if roots are unable to keep abreast of water requirements. Situating the mallet end of the cutting ensures a direct connection from de novo (newly formed) roots to the propagule's existing vasculature.
Alternately: I would secure a deeper pot, one that allows the mallet end of the cutting to rest atop of the grow medium. A quart milk carton of waxed cardboard or plastic could be pressed into handy service - don't forget to add a drain hole. Fill the bottom 1/3 of the container with about 2" of the medium shown in your image. Then add an inch or so of a mix of 3:1, perlite to peat, peat being the larger fraction. Situate the end of the adventitious root into the container so when you fill the remainder of the container with a 2:1 mix of Perlite, the mallet end rests on the soil. Cover with moist sphagnum moss (see image above) or simply cover the top of the container with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Should you chose this alternate method, it would still be a good Idea to reduce the surface area of the leaf for insurance.
Thank you so much Tapla! You are right, I feel nervous about my ability to carry out the first option though I see it would be a great long term solution. So I shall go with the alternative, really appreciate this advice.
