Kitchen Remodel help/options

last modified: 4 years ago

We are working with an architect and he supplied us with drawings for our kitchen. i got worried that the subsequent office was being impacted too much and would love to be able to use that room as an office/lounge (my husband works from home 100%). the architect is worried the impact is so negative on the kitchen as to be detrimental if we make the office area slightly bigger attaching the two drawings. we are totally redoing the kitchen, laundry area, breakfast wall and main bath (our room is the empty box) in this renovation. so not a small project.

Is there an Option 3 with an island rotated 90 degrees still retaining a large Office? Show the Living Room furniture and see if there is a large dead space between that and the island in Options 1 & 2.

Does your husband have clients come to him? Why does he need a large office? We want him to be comfortable but it seems like people really only need a desk and maybe a little bit of storage. I see he has a nice big window in there so it shouldn't feel too much like a closet even if it's smaller. And you probably have already thought of this but make sure to have solid doors and good insulation for that office. After two years of listening to my husband take meetings on speaker phone, sound reduction was one of the main things we're addressing in our current remodel! :)

I actually love the idea of an island rotated 90!

and no my husband has zero clients but we only have the one living space in the house. while i love my husband, our tv watching does not always align. the thought was to make the office a little more multi functional instead of just an office and add a couch and tv.

If you recessed the fridge into the office space, but left the remainder of the wall intact, you could gain some floor space for the aisle between the fridge and island (4'). Then, if you make the island deeper (5.5') and include a prep sink on the side facing the fridge and range, you could have separate prep and clean-up zones. Trash pull-out on the corner of the island could be shared by all zones.

Shallow book shelves or display shelves could fill in the bump-out in the office, or not.

Ohh I hadn't thought of a more square island! We actually already own a counter depth fridge that we are planning to reuse. I think the sticking out now is for door swing. I had requested no sink in island originally.

If you have other family members who help prep, cook, or clean up, as you work in the kitchen, a prep sink is nice so everyone has his own space. However, if you don't want or need a prep sink, the plan still works well without it, and you could include an extra stool where I drew prep sink. In that case, storing dishes in the island drawers would allow helpers to unload the DW, or gather dishes to set the table, while you are prepping to the left of the sink:

I am going to send this to our architect! having a square style island i know

you have a center dead space but do you think you lose a lot of storage?

I also hate wasted space. Having a corner in the kitchen makes me cringe a little
