Pink climbing rose for TN

Hi! Im looking for a pink climbing rose for each corner of my pergola. the roof is about 8ft off the groung so it needs to grow at least 12+ ft.

Do you have any you adore? I am thinking about doing a different one on each corner. Anything from blush pink to deep pink is fine!

My biggest hope is LOTS of blooms!! Good smelling would be nice also, but not a requirement.

What are your favorite pink climbers?

Full sun. Zone 6B/7A. Well draining, Fertile soil about 30 ft from a creek bank.

    Daniela, your photos are gorgeous.

! It's because of you that I have a Raspberry Cream Twirl coming in April. 🙂

I got a band of Mel's Heritage last summer and the little it bloomed it was just lovely. It's good to hear that repeat improves as it established. We're building a big pergola for it this year. From what people say on this forum, it's a fabulous rose!

Spirit of Freedom and Strawberry Hill are two really nice David Austin pink climbers but I think they are in the 8 to 10 ft range. Mine are both one year old own root (gallon sized) plants and they're at about 6 ft. They're beautiful and deliciously fragrant but might be slightly shorter than what you're looking for. Helen on this forum has established specimens of both so she might be able to better weigh in on the final size. If you're interested in either, i recommend searching for both roses in previous Houzz posts. Helen has posted some wonderful photos

Baby Strawberry Hill just 2 months after planting.

I didn't take any pictures of Spirit of Freedom on the plant, but you can see the beautiful cupped bloom here. It's the lilac pink petal packed rose in this photo.

Diane on this forum also has a spectacular Collette. So beautiful that I wish I had room to add one to my garden.

I can't find my Spirit of freedom pictures right now, but it would also be a wonderful climber and it has a very nice fragrance.

Thank you very much Librarian! I really hope RCT does well for you. Mel's heritage is definitely a very large plant and a pergola would be amazing for it, I can't wait to see it in the future. I actually had plans for a pergola around the front of my house (weird ranch style with no front entrance, just a big window and door on the side). I was planning on using Me'ls heritage with Viking Queen as per Vapor's recommendation or Colette since I love Diane's so much. I may not be able to do the pergola for a while and I am currently planning a big hedge of Olivia Austin instead in that area.

I love how beautiful your baby Strawberry hill looks, I am shovel pruning two this year because they just don't keep their leaves here without constant spraying. It definitely seems to like your climate.

Vapor you are right, Peggy is also a wonderful healthy rose that can be grown without spraying. I am not sure if it repeats yet here. I have one that I am hoping will make my ugly shed look romantic one day.

I would like to add Felix LeClerc, Victorian Memory, The Generous Gardener and Rosy Mantle. LongAgoRoses especially recommended TGG and RM last year. While small they did make it through a 4+deg.F winter and grew well last summer. Both had very pretty flowers. In my friends garden PMartin repeats surprisingly well in full sun. I gave him both of mine and am a bit jealous as I only saw one or two flushes in increasing shade throughout the Summer. Super vigorous and easily trained. Blossomtime is another beauty that blooms well. I believe it was a favourite of Jens when she live in TN.

Dianela, I cant wait to see my Mel this spring after planting as a small cutting last year. It was damaged as well so its very vigorous to have recuperated so well.I order RCT for my friends house last year during an Heirloom sale and its doing well so far. Its next to Don Juan and Mme Alfred Carriere.I almoxt forgot Jasmina.

I grow Pinkie Cl. in Middle Tennessee. One of these days I'll get around to training it up the post but I'm growing fonder and fonder of its casualness in bush form and flower form. Its blooms with very good repeat for a climber, healthy with no spray. Thin easy to work with canes that are low on thorns. I think it is rated at 7a but it is definately in a 6b/6a setting with lots of cold wind so I do get a minor amount of die back.

The above pictures were taken at sunset and are much warmer than what she really is. This is more recent and probably a better photo for accurate color:

I also grow Rosanna which is salmony pink and it is very happer here. This one is just a couple years:

I also grow Lagunda a darker hotter pink. Laguna is very vigorus and does need some good managemnt. It is healthy but it's still only a couple years old and I'm hoping for improved bloom repeat--whihc is not unusal as climbers get more and more established.

Last one. I have Viking Queen and she probably is the most beautiful and classic bloom form. But she has just not put on much size and think she is at least 4 years old and I still can't get her up on top of a 3.5' picket fence so I don't see her doing a whole pergola--although you might ask others if you like her. Good disease resistance (I don't spray) rebloom is getting better but her best qualtiy are her gorgeous blooms:

subk3, your roses look very happy in your garden. They're so pretty. I also like the metal trellis with Laguna. Wondering where did you get it?

My blossom times is gorgeous and perfectly healthy no spray here. I have 2 maybe 3-4 year old plants and they refuse to climb for me. I know it climbs for others but I just will have to enjoy it as a bush

awakening also beautiful and healthy. my rebloom hasnt been great but she is in oart shade

I think we are all growing a lot of same roses!🤗

Yes Vapor we probably do grow a lot of the same varieties. I personally always try to read to see what roses you all say perform well with blackspot and choose those to try here. I feel like this increased the chances of choosing the correct variety.

Btw: I have always wanted to try Eden. Do you know if it can be grown no spray? I may need to ask on a post about it.

Wow!! You all spoil me! i came back to see if i have any replies… and was blown away by all of your beautiful pictures. Just exquisite roses!

Thank you so much for all of the suggestions, advice, and pictures! I’m going to look into some of these options and I’ll definitely let you all know what I end up choosing !

    Thank you!

Yes, I have had the most success with roses either planting more of what I know likes it in my garden, or listening to others who garden in the same climate I do. Suggestions from other areas are fun to look at, but "local knowledge" is what will produce success, IMO.

@Feiy (PNWZ8b/9a) Thank you! I have a local metal-work guy who also creates wonderful art pieces from found items and scrap metal as a side gig. The trellises were leftover scrap metal he had collected and he put side rails on them for me.

@jacqueline9CA I do the same! When ever @dianela7analabama says something does well in her garden I put it on a list that I keep updated all year until it's time to order.

Nobody on Here Gardens Near me anymore, but I do look at HMF. I also look for people in West Virginia and south of me such such as Tennessee or Kentucky. The problem is we have extreme clay here where s some parts of Ohio and West Virginia et cetera have a sandier Soil that's more acidic.

@Vaporvac Z6-OhioRiverValley Then some day your posts will be of tremendous help to someone who wants to garden in your area. So at least there's that!
