A good engineered wood floor can last just as long as solid wood floor. Engineered quality has improved greatly in past 10 to 15 years. Especially if you like that long and wide look, your choices need be in engineered format for stability. Using Lauzon floor as an example, their engineered counterpart costs more than solid. The reason is that it takes quite much more for a floor mill to make quality engineered than solid. A good quality engineered wood floor usually has a 3 to 4mm sawn-cut veneer.

I will be installing over frame (raised foundation with crawl space). I have a kid on the way! maybe a doodle in the future. Also live in northern california if that helps

Go solid if you can! I have a concrete slab so had to go engineered and picked Lauzon love the finish and looks. What is a doodle is that some kind of cookie?

I like the aesthetics possible with a 11" wide engineered plank floor. You get to see much more of the figure of wood. That's what I enjoy looking at. A solid 4" plank doesn't show the beauty of the wood as much. Solid has tongue and groove limiting sandings to the same amount as 6mm engineered.
