modernize fireplace
I have this wood burning fireplace with a black metal frame around it (not sure if the technical term) and we want to modernize it.
I was told the black frame can’t be removed.
Would you put black tile around it to mask it a bit?
Should I leave it and build out the drywall to give it some depth?
Any thoughts appreciated. Feeling a bit overwhelmed.
Our style in minimal and modern. Don’t love too many busy lines/ wood rustic mantles etc.

Thank you Beverly! These are all lovely. We are trying to update the fireplace without spending a fortune.
Our style is minimalist modern but warm- so like clean lines, natural stones and neutral colors.
I would like to pull the eye up to the high ceilings which also helps tie the split levels together.
Originally we thought if adding tile to go all the way to the ceiling but that got expensive quickly.
So now thinking, we could create a drywall bump out to frame the height above the fireplace but was wondering if I need tile around the fireplace or can I keep it clean with just drywall? Don’t love the idea of three different materials boxes with metal, tile and then drywall. Feels like it could look clunky.

PRO4 years agoWhy not start with selecting what you plan to place above the fireplace and work backward. Maybe you don't need to build anything.

@beverlyFLADeziner- love the tall painting above it and that’s what I plan on placing there. And actually did start there, but felt like it needed something more to frame it.
