I can get both bins out - no need to take front out to get the back out….

In my last house I had a pullout like the first picture in mamagoose's post. Never got a question from the cabinet firm about it. We had 2 equal-sized cans and no trouble pulling out far enough to reach the back one. Sourced from Rev-a-Shelf.

I have the trash pull out like the first pic mamagoose posted. No issues getting rear trash can out.

Mine are not a problem it’s the handle on the drawer above it that I have to tilt the van in the back to clear the handle.

First, the only time I have seen the issue you are describing is when the wrong size cans are used.

Next, I doubt any pre-made trash pull out kit is going to have longer . So if your cabinetmaker only uses pre-made kits then he is correct. He could likely get the kit and swap hinges or just custom make the pull outs. I suspect if you push him he do it.

We have unused depth in the island -- about 6 inches of empty space behind the cabinets ... assuming he is able to source the Blum extra-long full-extension drawer glides.

Before I'd sign off on that, I'd want to know how much those extra 6" will cost. Yes, extra space is great ... but there's a limit to what I'd be willing to pay for slightly deeper drawers.

However, for the pull-out trash, the answer was no because they come as a unit and are only made for standard cabinets.

I am in the minority here, but I'd think twice about building a custom item to encapsulate garbage.

Yes, most things like this CAN be built ... if your builder has the skills and you're willing to pay the cost.

Thank you, everyone, for your responses. It sounds like most folks do not have an issue with getting the rear can out, so maybe our current one was just made incorrectly or something. I will just go with the rev-a-shelf thing he wants to use and hope for the best! Thanks again!

We have a problem with our current pull-out trash that I was hoping we coiuld remedy with extra-deep glides -- we cannot get the rear can (recycling) out without removing the front can (trash). The glides on our current trash are full-extension,

That problem could probably be fixed by replacing the full extension slides with 'over travel' ('over-extension') drawer slides. Typically over extension slides give you an extra inch of travel. Usual use is for the just under the counter top drawer.

He could make a custom trash pullout in order to utilize that extra 6". But he wants to outsource a ready made pullout and does not want to custom make one. So he isn't a real 'custom cabinet maker'. Semi-custom at best or parts assembler at worst.
