Are these acceptable?

I received these two from a, uh, "reputable" grower/online retailer. I bought from them last year and was hesitant to do so again. The ones I got last year weren't nearly this bad but took forever to break dormancy. I only bought from them again because I couldn't find the varieties elsewhere. I ordered early and am not in a "last to be shipped zone".

I grow in pots because of gophers, they've even killed two cherry trees.

Sorry about the photos, I can do better on Tuesday. Yes, I need to cut some weeds.

Thanks,

gary

Yeah those sure don't look great IMO.

Not good. What zone are you in? Based on the size of the weeds, I'd guess a warmer zone, so this seems really late to be receiving bare roots. But if you grow cherry trees, maybe not so warm. I see no problem with identifying the seller, unless they're a small mom'n'pop operation.

    Interval between receipt and photos?

And do you know how many days in transit from seller to you?

I would ask for a refund and never buy from them again.

Ditto, personally I would throw them away. But people here have brought worse from the dead. Not me, though :)

Get a refund. Those are in very poor condition. Don't buy from them again, no matter how badly you may be tempted.

Those look terrible. I put in my first order with Hortico early this spring and haven't received it. DA Roses say they're at the end of their bare root shipping period and Hortico tells me they have to wait for their weather to warm up. They said they'd ship late March. So I have not been charged for them yet and think they might try to do it next week, which is really late for my zone, zone 7a NC. I don't want bottom of the barrel leftovers sent to me and would rather lose my deposit than go ahead with an order if they might look like this. But I don't know where you got yours.

Mine came late from Hortico in the past and they arrived fresh and in great condition and did wonderfully. Do not worry Erasmus.

Thank you all for the comments. I am in zone 9b in the northern San Joaquin Valley in California.

These came from Edmunds. I looked through my emails and they were shipped 2/9 and delivered on 2/12. They went into a bucket of water for a day then into the containers as you see now. They have been kept moist since then, not allowed to dry out. They haven't changed in all that time - what you see is how they were when they arrived.

Given my previous, single, experience with Edmunds I didn't know if this is the norm for them or if I somehow landed on their "send something out of the trash pile" list.

Soon after they arrived I developed a still-on-going health condition and am more-or-less not dealing with minor things like trying to convince a vendor that they sent me shoddy goods, packing them up, and shipping them back.

I just wanted to check with the folks here to see if these are as bad as I think they are and if this is what I can expect from online sellers.

There's still some green on them and I'm hopeful that they might push some growth. It took the ones I received last year two months to wake up.

No, I will not buy from them again, nor would I encourage others to do so.

    Thanks again,

I KNEW in my gut that this was Edmunds. I almost said it last night. I have had terrible experience with them in 2020 and 2021. I was a long-time happy customer when the family owned it, but didn't order after they sold to Jung's. Then in 2020, I decided to roll the dice and ordered 5 roses. All were sub-par, definitely not #1's, and one was mislabeled. I got a refund on the mislabeled one, 6 months later. I went crazy in 2021, and ordered 8 from them b/c they had some harder-to-get ones. Even worse result than in 2020. I'd say I got 3 somewhat decent ones. They were all beat to heck... looked like they'd been put in a tumbler awhile ago, with scraped canes. "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me" applies here (to me). I didn't complain, but wrote them off permanently. My hypothesis is that they send their crummiest roses to warmer zones, so that the ones kept in storage for the colder zones have a better chance of making it. @waiting_gw If you're in No. Calif, you might consider ordering from Regan's for mail order bare roots. There are other mail order options for bare roots.

Sorry for this repost. I editted my post to correct my misspelling of your name but figured you'd only see the change if I did another post. You were kind and I didn't want to let it go.

I would ask for a refund or replacement. You have nothing to lose. But, they may understandably not give it to you since it's been close to 2 months since you received them.

I wouldn't trash Edmunds because of one bad rose. I've gotten bad roses from many very good vendors. Sometimes the only ones they have of a certain type are bad. So, the question is would you rather get a rose that's not in great shape with the hope of nursing it to good health? Or just not get it at all? There are times I would opt for the former.

I just requested a refund today on a barefoot rose that arrived looking very dead. I was told it was just dormant and I should plant it. Two weeks later, no signs of life so I contacted them again to request a refund. i got the refund along with a reply saying the canes were green just under the brown and they will break dormancy soon.

I'd like to see a photo of your problem rose Markay.

This is what I received. i did not take a picture of the roots, but it did have a really nice root system.

Because of my vole issue, I put it in a pot. about 2 weeks later it looks like this…

I agree Markay that plant looks too brown and dried out. I have heard burying the entire plant in moist soil for a period can give the worst looking roses a chance, but you deserve a refund.

I will add it to my vole damaged “watch and wait” collection collection.

got this ebb tide yesterday from Hirts

Has one green cane. The others likely won't have any leaves. One stem I can move back and forth with my pinkie. Thinking of just pulling it out.

Compare it to a Westerland I got about a month ago from Home Depot

    6 green canes.

That is a sad little plant Kidhorn2

I sent Hirts an email with the picture. Told them I'm willing to give it a chance, but if it doesn't make it, I want a refund or replacement. They're out of stock, so I guess a refund. You have 15 days with them. So if no top growth within the next two weeks, I want a refund.

I got two Brindabellas from Hirts this spring. very small plants, but they look healthy. it was my first time ordering from them.

Hirts gave me a refund. And I get to keep the rose. Good for them (and maybe me). Although I would have preferred a big healthy rose.

I got a Brindabella Dawn. it was small but so far so good. I think I paid $7.99, so I expected the smallest rose you can get. I didn't even need a shovel to plant it. I used a trowel and fingers to dig the hole.

I honestly cant believe some of the garbage being sent out.

Dont they realize that they will be refunding and losing credibility with what they ship ?

Well, it appears that I'm not the only one. Taking a cue from Sheila's post about burying the whole plant I think I'm going to make a mini green house over each plant with a clear garbage bag to create a moist environment.

I really didn't want to order from Edmunds but I wanted the palest of pink (hybrid tea) roses - Meredith seemed to fit that bill. The only other option (according to helpmefind) was Otis and Sons, but that's quite a drive. It was only later that I stumbled upon Regan and found that they carry it.

Turns out I could also have gotten the Love Song from Regan. (I don't understand why it wasn't carried locally, Weeks supplies the 3 retail nurseries in my area. I guess they've never seen Diane Brakefield's pictures.)

While the money is an issue, there's also the annoyance and another year's wait to, hopefully, get some good plants. I might even drive to Regan, Fremont is only about 70 mile away.

    Thanks, all.

    Hi, Friends,

Wow, All the photos above are of ”partly dead, very brown mistly dead, rose canes. Rose canes are supposed to be green. You should NOT pay for receiving 70-80% dead canes. Some canes are green inside if brown, but you really ought to receive more healthy canes than ”-mostly dead canes,” w/some green maybe inside them.

after a very cold winter, I may have some canes that look that bad by end of a very cold winter. I usually prune back all brown canes and start w/ all new green ones as they are more healthy.

however, these are supposed to be NEW-so they ought to be ALL GREEN and LOOK NEW-to give you the healthiest rose start.

Id ask for replacements from all of them.

You may wish to check w/us to see better nurseries to buy from online such as “Antique Rose Emporium, Northland Rosarium, Heirloom Roses, Brecks,,Palatine Roses, Roses Unlimited, Long Ago Roses, David Austin Roses, J & P, Chamblees, Burlington Roses, Regans, Edmonds, and several more.“ Would you like more suggestions?

    HAPPY GARDENING!!!

Does anyone know a great online source for Ping Lim’s roses. I ordered ftom Whiteflower farms because I haven’t found a lot of sellers. I did find All the Rage available locally, but these don’t seem to be widely available which is a shame because they are great roses.

An update on Sweet Fragrance. The canes are definitely dead, but today I noticed new growth at the base! It is own-root.

That's a great thing about own root!! I'm happy for you! :) :)

I guess that I lucked out when I got the last Francis Meiland from Edmonds. It isnt the best but it is alive lol

Kristine - yup, you did well! :) :)

@Sheila z8a Rogue Valley OR, I was starting to question my sanity for continuing to tend abd water a dead rose, so I an thrilled to see a bit of life. It had a really well developed root system, so I hope this is the beginningnof great things.

    I hope so too, Markay!

    UPDATE

Well, the plant in my second photo has completely dried up but the one in the first, a Meredith fared a bit better.

Now if I ca get the photo to load...

Nope. I give up. I tried from two different computers. Maybe a size limit but I can't edit it right now. Anyway, the plant is doing well, given its start, and it's actually got two blooms.

    Success!

    Another miracle!

@waiting_gw How lovely! With your patience, what a wonderful result! 2 blooms is fantastic! Grow some hardy strong canes & you’ll have a durable rose for the future!!! What pretty porcelain light pink blooms!!! Now the perfect rose! Such a blessing! Woohoo!!!

It does seem like a miracle, Sheila, given the way it looked just a short time ago. I was surprised and pleased when it started greening up, Kitty, and really surprised to get blooms. Hopefully my stewardship will be equal to the effort it put out to reach this point.

    Excellent!! :) :)
