Kitchen layout advice.

I wanted to get some feedback on the proposed kitchen layout.

What is bothering me is that the current oven(rightmost on the wall with the window) is quite far from the main cooking area, but that was a compromise to get more working space around the cooktop. We don't use the oven too much, so we could live with this, but I am open to suggestions.

Thanks!

I wonder, how would you feel about switching the fridge and oven? If you cook a lot with fresh ingredients, the general flow is to move from fridge to sink (to rinse etc), then to a cutting board and finally to the cooktop. the way you currently have things, you will be crossing the room with your fridge things in order to reach the sink...

I agree with garden girl. The main use appliances are fridge, sink, and cooktop and you want your fridge closer to the sink like where the wall oven is proposed to be.

i agree. id switch fridge n wall oven. of course you can have a full stove instead of a cooktop oven then youd have two ovens - always a plus in a kitchen

Keep in mind you need to be able to fully open both fridge doors to pull out shelves and bins for cleaning, so fridges tucked up against a wall might not work.

I like switching the fridge. keep in mind a landing zone for hot things coming out of the oven - with the current layout you need to twist around to the island or take a few steps to the left - there isnt enough clearance with that tall cabinet.

    Something like this

Thanks for the suggestion. Off to run it by the wife. Only issue that I see is that the fridge door in the new position would overlap with the patio door opening.

An oven is not an appliance that one needs to open frequently--generally, you put something in then go back when the timer goes off. I'd leave the fridge where it is, since the layout separates the clean-up and dish storage zone from the prep and cooking zones. Helpers can load or unload the DW, or gather dishes to set the table, without interfering in prep and cooking tasks. The only problem with having that much distance between the cooktop and ovens would be if you often brown or braise meats, then move them to the oven to finish.

Thanks @mama goose_gw zn6OH. We will center the sink under the window in the final plan which would bring the dishwasher and clean up area a bit closer to the prep and cook area. We use the oven sparingly, mostly to bake or make pizza.

@marylut Yes, I agree about enough clearance for the fridge doors as well, which is why we've put in along the left wall with clearance on either side.

Sorry, I didn’t realize the wall by oven was actually patio doors that open fridge door would block. My concern for you (based on the way I use my kitchen) is how far the fridge is from the sink. If the left corner to fridge is 17.5 feet and left wall to sink is 8 ft, your fridge is 18ft from sink if I did the triangle math correctly, and that is a lot of steps during prep. I supposed that is OK if you get everything from fridge and pantry at same time pile them on the island to do the prep.
