Sunflower plants and rodents / pests

A long time ago I succeeded in growing some of those mammoth sunflower plants. I don't know what happened, but since then whenever I plant sunflower seeds or transplant them outside something comes along and either eats the seed or munches the young plant. We do have gray squirrels and chipmunks, so they are suspects. Any ideas on protecting the plants?
