Don't overcrowd the space. It will only look more cluttered. A closed cabinet for shoes would be better than open shelves. A mirror over it, bench beside it. No table. Plant is great idea for other corner and art on the wall

As a person who had a lot of shoes by the door when my kids were small, Once a week clear out the shoes. Theres really no reason to have 24 pairs of shoes by the door. I know that we had sandals floating around in december. If you make it a habit for everyone to take their shoes to their room, you wont have to get a giant shoe organizer, you can get a piece of furniture that you love that has room for some shoes. Good luck, they grow fast.

Ive thought abour meeting most of their shoes in their closet but the girls share a room and the closet is small. Not so much extra space for shoes...

I had an over the door shoe hanger thing behind the basement door which was near the entry, held a bunch of shoes. My kids had a ton of shoes, lol ,totally my fault, im a shoe enabler! My 20 year old son has a ridiculous sneaker collection. Im looking to have shelves installed, i wonder why that happened. Do you have a space you could stash an OTD shoe organizer? How about a pull out for under their beds to stash some shoes?

Our home is small with limited closet space. We have 2 closed shoe cabinets in our entrance and 2 shoe trays for winter boots. Despite me training the family to use these, everyone leaves their shoes in the living room entrance. It will only get better when my teens go to college this fall.

Good luck and hopefully your parenting skills are better than mine! Open storage, while not as visually pleasing, is often better used.

Open shoe storage is nice for guests too. Guests will not open closed doors to put shoes away, they will leave them somewhere on your floor.

I would put your bench, shoe storage, and any sort of coat rack on the wall where you currently have your chair and shoe rack. The Wayfair storage combo you posted look nice. I would put a very shallow shelf or console table on the other side, with a mirror over it. That's a perfect place to check your hair and lipstick before leaving, or set down your keys when entering. Is that wall actually curved, or is that just an effect from your camera? If it's curved, I would do a shelf--scribe the shelf back edge to follow the wall curve, and taper the front edge down to meet the wall at the end farthest from the door.

In that case, maybe a coat tree, or just coat hooks, on the curved wall (but get family members to take coats to their bedrooms, and keep hooks open just for guests). Then a console table with mirror above, and a bench with shoe storage on the other wall. For the console table, look for something with an open shelf under the table top, so guests have a place to put their handbags.

Loved my sister's training method for husband and kids. She worked long hours, traveled a lot and kept begging hubby and kids to help. Then one day she decided she was done. She bought a couple of garbage cans and put them along the side of the garage where she parked. When she got home she took one of the garbage cans along into the house with her. She walked through her first floor and gathered everything that was abandoned and sitting out. Shoes, coats, papers, books, games, . . . Everything went into the garbage can. If the kids couldn't find their shoes they knew where to look. She let things sit in the garbage cans until trash night. She warned them on trash night that anything left in the cans would go out with the garbage. It didn't take long for them to understand that Mom is no longer asking.

BTW - her two daughters are now grown and some of the most organized young adults I have ever known.

That sounds like a great idea. I do a version of that sometimes. I ask the kids to clean up. If they don't, I tell them I'll clean up, but everything I pick up will be put away and they'll have to do chores to earn it back.

You want some version of this--low bench for kids to put down backpacks and put their shoes in a basket. (Label baskets and don't do Ikea shoe organizer until kids are older.) Put low hooks for backpacks and coats if you're okay with them being out in the open. Then they're ready to go the next morning--shoes, backpacks, jackets all in one place. Add a really nice good-sized indoor/outdoor rug in colors that go with floor and furnishings in adjacent spaces.

la_la Girl has a good idea. You could order a custom shelf from Etsy. Just put "cubby storage bench" in the search box on the Etsy site. Also "coat rack shelf"

When I put those search terms into the Wayfair search box, these came up. You could order two side by side for everyone's shoes, adult shoes included!

Get two hanging shelves. Hang one low for kids' stuff and one higher for adults' bag. Put clock and mirror above them and some family photos for a friendly entryway.

If kids are little, open storage is probably best for now. A beautiful clock above, a nice, mirror, family photos, and a great rug that goes with the rest of you house can make your entryway practical and attractive.

Here's a tip: make a game out of training the kids to put their shoes in the cubbies or baskets. Stop them right at the door. First one to get shoes in the right place, coat & backpack hung up, gets a treat or a star. Teachers train kids to do this all the time at school.

Sorry but that clutter at a front door is just not good. Why are you using the fornt door for family entry ? Maybea bit more info please. BTW under bed storage for shoes is awesome you can get ones that are on wheels to move easily and I agree take the shoes to their rooms you can only wear one pair at a time .. I have no idea about your style but IMO a front entry needs to a hint as to the iterior of the house and its style. IMO you need an entry closet more that just shoe storage and if the kids take their coats to their rooms no reason to not take shoes.This is a DIY underbed storage
